I have had problems running some of their recent videos in a virtual Windows machine inside Parallels Desktop for Mac: the video stutters and gets out of sync with the audio.

ChessBase have not suggested a solution to this problem, and it seems that their recent videos won't run in Parallels Desktop. So this is definitely an advantage of the new Mac-compatible ones.

I just got one of these. It seems to work well enough -- though, since it runs as a standalone app, you obviously don't get all the features of ChessBase. For example, you can't search for the current position in your reference database. You can analyse with the built-in engine, but I'm not sure which engine it is. It's rather harder to get the panes to the size and arrangement that you want.

If I keep buying ChessBase videos at the same rate that I have in the past, my Applications folder will soon be crammed with them. I don't know why they can't provide a single app, like ChessBase Reader, that works for all their Mac-compatible videos.

My main reservation is that, if you already use ChessBase, you will already have a PC and/or some way to run ChessBase on your Mac. You're not going to stop using ChessBase just because you have one or two videos in the form of Mac apps. So what exactly is the point? After the novelty has worn off I will probably run this new video inside ChessBase, like all the others.

However, one possible advantage of the new format is that I have had problems running some of their recent videos in a virtual Windows machine inside Parallels Desktop for Mac: the video stutters and gets out of sync with the audio. This doesn't happen on a PC, so I suspect that they may have made some change which means that their recent videos are not fully compatible with Parallels. If so, that would be annoying.

Maybe this thread ought to be in the Chess and Computers forum?

I don't have too much to add beyond the title. Has anyone tried the Chessbase Mac DVDs? If so, how are they? How much functionality is lost compared to Windows versions?

Thanks a lot in advance for any feedback!
