I finally finished it and very much enjoyed it. Chess is the vehicle for the story, much like pool was the vehicle for, "The Hustler."  So accuracy is there, **BUT** only what is needed for the story. No one promised you a rose garden. Otherwise, the story concentrates on the characters. Something I strongly preferred considering the reality garbage that is out there. Production values were excellent and sets, costumes, cars, etc. seemed excellent as well. The main character, at various points in the story, wallows in drugs & alcohol unapologetically, which makes sense in terms of the plot, but I find unlikely to draw young girls to chess - as some have suggested. It is really about one young woman's journey from dysfunctional childhood to a satisfying resolution. The ending is poignant and sweet. For adults and teens only, IMHO.

I read the book a while ago and thought it was fine as well and actually seemed to show the chess stuff fairly well.  I'm interested to watch this series.

The author of the book (Walter Trevis) has had some other books made into films that you may be more familiar with:

The Hustler (1963) - Pool movie starring Paul Newman
The Color of Money (1986) - sequel to the Hustler with Newman and Tom Cruise (directed by Scorcese). Newman won his only best actor oscar for this role.
The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) - starring David Bowie. I don't think I've ever watched this one though.

Tbh it is good to hear Kasparov is a consultant as that means they shouldn't have any chess errors... from that trailer, it looked like it would have every classic chess mistake on film possible.

The story looks terrible. It's almost like they wanted to take Judit combine her with Nabokov stories / Morphy / Fischer etc and the classic soviet boogeyman... what came out in that trailer was pure garbage imo. Of course I am only judging it on the trailer. It is definitely something I would never watch because the story is not interesting even in the slightest. Combing every trope in chess ever heard of into one bad story

I read the book a while ago and thought it was fine, although of course novels about chess are not as interesting and dramatic as chess itself.

The online reviews that I could find were pretty positive. I doubt that it will be the worst thing ever produced, but I guess you never know.

Looks like a real candidate for worst thing ever produced.
