Some websites do some sort of cunning encryption to stop you capturing the video as you stream it. I don’t know whether any of the chess sites do this.

Chessable also goes out of their way to make it very hard to actually achieve a simple PGN file with all the comments. As far as I know you can view the tree of variations in something like an opening explorer format, and all the variations separately with comments if you use the move trainer, but not something just like the standard layout in Chessbase - nested variations with comments. Quite lame if you ask me.  Cry

I agree, and that’s the main reason why I won’t use Chessable.

But what’s the problem with Chessbase videos? Is it the fact that you have to activate them (or at least the recent ones)?

You could also just start it up and capture in something like XSplit and come back later, given the knowledge of the video length. Wouldn't be bad at all I think. This is a very annoying facet to content of all kinds in 2021 though. Chessable also goes out of their way to make it very hard to actually achieve a simple PGN file with all the comments. OK. That would be pretty tedious for a 6 hour video, but I know what you mean and know how to do that. I know I could do it in segments and re-join later. I use iSkysoft and ConvertXtoDVD tools for such work. But hadn't considered that so thanks Jupp.

There shouldn't any problem using a screen capture program. Here in Germany private use is legal.

Greetings,

So, I am aware of thechessworld.com as one site that allows you to permanently D/L and own the chess videos they sell. I'm not saying that videos are the be-all and end-all of chess knowledge. But if I am going to study one I very strongly believe it should be something I own, have a permanent copy of (digital ok), can burn to disc if needed, or otherwise transfer for personal use as I see fit. That's my definition of ownership.
It seems (I might be wrong) that Chess.com only sells "access", not ownership as I have defined it. Chessbase also is proprietary in its own way too. I wanted to ask this:

Do you know of other sites for chess videos that allow for the kind of ownership I listed above and perhaps those you feel have the best content?

TIA,

Cathexis
