Would this repertoire, or at least some parts of it, be suitable for a keen youngster (currently around 1500) who loves to attack but doesn't want to learn reams of main line theory? My biggest concern is the Carlsen anti-Najdorf. I don't really understand why this isn't just good for Black, who not only has an extra central pawn but isn't even behind in development; but I'm a patzer myself, so I'm probably just showing my ignorance. Would the youngster be better off with the Moscow or the Grand Prix?

The short answer is: Yes, Coffeehouse is a wonderful book for the described audience.

Moscow would not seem ideal for your purposes unless the person is already a big fan of the Rossolimo.  I am aware of Ivanchuk - Kasparov (Linares 1991) but most Moscow games seem to be long maneuvering struggles akin to the Hedgehog or closed Ruy Lopez.

Carlsen vs. GPA is a matter of taste.  I would go with Carlsen as it is fresher.  Seems to me Black has a hard time if Black does not play the Bh6 mainline.  Others might prefer the GPA or Classical Dutch pawn structure and typical maneuvers.

Another option is the old Qxd4 variation (Chekhover) intending the bishop pin instead of Carlsen's Qd2.

The new Milner-Barry v French appears to be kinda expected. As has been covered here prior. He has played this.

And I would expect the Scotch Gambit line he plays (see e.g. Jones - l'Ami).

I haven't been on the QC blog in a while. Does anyone who frequents it more regularly know if there are any rumours about what he'll give against 1...e5 and the French?

Thank you Cathexis, I can't imagine being in a tropical storm/hurricane on an island, even one as substantial as P.Rico. A few limbs down here and yon, but nothing major. We went through Michael which was really scary, but by the grace of God here I am!

I have it on FC. Seems really good so far, but I haven't gone deeply into it yet.

Vs Sicilian, it's similar to the 'Butcher the Sicilian' course on chessable: Magnus Sicilian, Tiviakov variation, and other tricky and generally challenging lines after 2.Nc3.

Vs Scandi, delaying Nf3 hoping for c4 and d4 taking the centre. At a glance, it doesn't seem as strong as the mainline, but your opponents will be less used to it, and black can easily end up in trouble if he lets white take over the centre unopposed. I'm looking forward to trying this out.

Vs Alekhine : 4 pawns attack. I am loving this space grabbing line, and have won all of my games online with it so far. Black really has to be precise not to get run over!

Vs Caro : exchange with early Nf3-e5, trying to get the bishop pair. I have looked at this a bit, and it seems a bit tame for my taste. I would have rather seen something like the fantasy variation or a sharp line of the advance given instead, but maybe this line is worth a try.

Hope this helps!

Sorry, I meant delaying Nc3 in the Scandi.

I was caught up in hurricane Gilberto in the Yucatan in 1987. From beginning to end. Hurricane or not, these storms can be unimaginably powerful. I hope for Elsa to wreak no havoc for you and yours. Stay safe.

So I have a copy at hand. I haven't done more than leaf through, a bit preoccupied with Elsa, but if you have questions I will try to answer.

Hi! I didn't see a thread discussing this book already. Has anyone gotten the first volume yet? Seems appealing...
