My copy arrived today. A first glance taught me it's great fun. Missing: the Ponziani and the Göring Gambit.
Nitpicking: neither the Danes nor GM Mieses deserve the credit. The Swedish diplomat Hans Anton Westesson Lindehn does, if alone for beating WIlhelm Steinitz with it. Few games by Lindehn survived, but it's safe to assume he played it quite often.

The Ponziani and the Göring Gambit are covered, at least in the ChessBase version of the book that I've mainly been referring to (where they're covered in database numbers 59-64).  Against the Ponziani he gives 3...d5 4.Qa4 f6 and 4.Bb5 dxe4 5.Nxe5 Qg5.  Against the Göring he gives 4...d5 and, if White allows it, the Capablanca Variation.

They are also in the physical book. Chapter six.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

As you'll see, I give 4...bxc6!? in that line.

4... dxc6 always felt pretty ok but 4... bxc6 also looks pretty interesting. Looking forward to seeing your work.

Curiously enough I also get a lot of 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5  f5 4. Bxc6 dxc6 5. Nxe5 Qd4 6. Qh5+ g6 7. Nxg6 in the Jaenisch

Quick update.

I misplayed one of the Ng5 games, but thankfully so did my opponent and it's become a fried liver attack declined. We're 13 moves in and I'm now a pawn and an exchange up, with the two bishops and my opponents pawn structure is a mess (iso pawns on d3, b3 and b2). I'm not sure I see good squares for at least 2 of white's remaining pieces. It's followed one of the lines given in the book.

The other two two knights games are also still ongoing. Closer affairs but still following book lines.

I've now also got two Ruy Lopez's just starting up and am keen to see how those go as they look like they can get a bit hairy!.

Post them here when you're done Smiley

Ordered the book. Have been playing Ulvenstad and the Jaenisch as a very average player for a while and I think I only met Bf1 once in 29 Ulvenstad games. Curiously enough I also get a lot of 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5  f5 4. Bxc6 dxc6 5. Nxe5 Qd4 6. Qh5+ g6 7. Nxg6 in the Jaenisch (7 out of 86 games). Like I said: very middling level.

nteresting. First 3 games online I'm playing with this repertoire and I'm playing 3 games in the two knights - 2 with 4. Ng5 and one with d3. "Lets have a bit of Hooliganism"  Grin

No other games against 1.e4 yet

What's the attraction of the ...Qh4 Scotch? with White I'm always happy to give a pawn for misplaced and uncomfortable king. What's Black idea, to survive and hold the pawn? if so, it looks a bit like the infamous sicilian line repeatedly played by Sveshnikov (the father) with White: 1. e4 c5 2.f4 d5 3.exd5 Nf6 4.c4 e6 5.dxe6 Bxe6. Only his extensive practice could overcome the defects in his position.
Regarding 3...Qe7 against the Danish, one has to be careful when recommending it. Black clearly wins the e-pawn but White's activity is certain. When showing the move to scholars it's almost always a disaster for Black. Is it much different with preparation?

Valid questions – which could be asked about pretty much the entire book. Basically, you either want to play this sort of thing or you don't Wink

Thanks, Jonathan and PANFR. I'm managing better with the 3 Knights now. Next step is to persuade myself that 4...Qh4 against the Scotch is really a goer - though I've done OK so far.

Naturally I'd be very interested to see any of these games Smiley

I wanted to ask what, if anything, Jonathan covers in the King's Gambit? In particular, the Quaade? Asking since it is featured in the Shaw book.

King's Gambit: 2 f4 exf4 and variiously 3 Nf3 h5, 3 Bc4 f5, 3 Nc3 Qh4+, 3 Be2 f5, 3 Qf3 Nc6, 3 d4 Qh4+.

As Jedi says, one line of the Quaade is covered via the Vienna: 2 Nc3 Nc6 3 f4 exf4 4 Nf3 g5 5 g3 with 5...Bg7 as a simple solution for Black.

It took me longer than I expected to buy this, as I've been busy.  With being a fan of this general approach to openings and having 1...e5 as one of my two main responses to 1.e4 (my other favourite, 1...d5 and the Smerdon's Scandinavian stuff, is in a similar vein), though, I couldn't pass it up.

thanks Smiley

Also, as someone who has studied the Danish and Göring Gambits extensively, I think 3...Qe7!? is a very good recommendation against the Danish, essentially accepting the gambit but on Black's terms rather than White's.

3...Qe7 also fits in with 4...Qh4 in the Scotch though is probably better than that Wink
