Carlsen's sour take on classical chess does not impress. Suffice it to say it resembles comments made by Capablanca, Fischer, Kramnik, and other great players *after they lost motivation.* They started thinking up chess variants (in Carlsen's case, faster games play that role). I think this phenomenon has a psychological etiology--unable to conquer this world again, they denigrate it and dream of another. It is notable that Anand, who has not lost motivation, said no such thing.
