Serbia discovered the Volcano Defense, it blew up at Iceland.

Hi.

It was very close at the end. Serbia played well, but maybe they were lucky they could blank Iceland in the first round. I remember flipping from a report about Grindavik evacuations on the Saturday, to reviewing the round one results where only Iceland and Montenegro Youth went 0-4. How focused were the Icelanders on the boards in front of them?

Going through the games Iceland actually seemed to fight very well in R1. It's just they somehow didn't end up with any points despite this. Pretty extraordinary scoring from Serbia there.
Speaking of Iceland. In the last round they not only go ahead and miraculously save a -5 position, they also dodge a TB loss (opponent missed it) and in the end draw Turkey 2-2. That meant four massively sweet Sonneborn-Berger points for Serbia. There are obviously a lot of other last round matches and even individual games that could have impacted the tiebreak as well, but that's the most funny example to me.

White to move. 47.Kxd5(?) was played.

Of course there is always some luck in Swiss events.

Hello.

Congratulations to Serbia on winning the European team ch. 2023 and Bulgaria for winning the Women's tournament.
https://chess-results.com/tnr832215.aspx?lan=1&art=0&rd=9&turdet=YES&flag=30

I looked at the tiebreaks below if anyone is interested (not official calculation though).
It's funny how literally half a game point difference in numerous matches (not only Serbia's or Germany's) could have swung the tiebreak to favour Germany.

Serbia
Iceland            4x9
Italy            2,5x9
Germany      1,5x15
Slovenia            3x8
Croatia            3x11
Armenia            2x13
Romania            2,5x11
England            2,5x11
Greece            3x11
=                  252
- cut 1 (Slovenia 24)
Total =                  228

Germany

Sweden            2,5x8
Hungary            2,5x11
Serbia            2,5x15
Poland            2x12
Armenia            3x13
Romania            2x11
England            2x11
France            2,5x11
Croatia            2,5x11
=                  247
-cut1 (Sweden 20)
=                  227

Have a nice day.
