In an interview on the latest NIC podcast, Jacob Aagaard provides additional details on his acquisition of New in Chess and Everyman and the structure of the New in Chess Group.

https://www.newinchess.com/blog/post/nic-podcast-54-jacob-aagaard?goal=0_ca50167...

He describes the three publishers (Quality Chess, New in Chess, and Everyman [now Popular Chess]) as three independent companies owned by one company (Squared Thinking). Aagaard says of Squared Thinking, "That's all accounting", so from the consumer's point of view it seems that the three publishing companies (which he refers to collectively as the "New in Chess Group") remain separate entities. However, he does indicate that each company will generally have its own niche; e.g., Popular Chess for club players and Quality Chess for stronger improvers.  There are more tidbits such as bringing "better" authors to Everyman/Popular Chess and upgrading/freshening the look of its publications.

I had the impression that the overarching company for New in Chess, Quality Chess, and Everyman Chess would be Squared Thinking Ltd (as mentioned by aoc in Reply #10), but it seems that Aagaard is using "New in Chess Group", at least for the moment.

I didn't read it that way. Aagaard said "We are working on integrating the backend operations in the New In Chess Group", which is awkwardly phrased, but I took it to mean: integrating the backend operations of Alkemaar with those in Glasgow. Ownership and branding are left unspecified, but it makes sense on the New In Chess blog to give a message about the New In Chess Group.

I received an email from New in Chess today, directing me to the latest post in the NiC blog, where Jacob Aagaard gives some new details on what he refers to as the "New in Chess Group".

https://www.newinchess.com/blog/post/singapore

He confirms that "Everyman Chess is changing its name to Popular Chess" and says "books will slowly move across as they go out of print. In 2025, we will also change the name on Kindle and other ePub formats". This last statement suggests that the Everyman ebooks will become available under the Popular Chess banner in 2025, but he didn't state that explicitly.

The blog also has links to a quarterly group leaflet, which looks a lot like the annual catalogs that Quality Ches puts out. The leaflet for Q4 2024 shows that The Iron English by Williams and Palliser will be the first Everyman book to be reprinted as a Popular Chess title. Based on the accompanying image, it looks like the Everyman reprints will have the standard Popular Chess cover design, but presumably with unchanged interiors (although I suppose the publisher information will need to be updated).

The only Popular Chess title in the leaflet that was new to me was Cyrus Lakdawala's The Greatest, where he selects the best players off all time (at least in his opinion).

I had the impression that the overarching company for New in Chess, Quality Chess, and Everyman Chess would be Squared Thinking Ltd (as mentioned by aoc in Reply #10), but it seems that Aagaard is using "New in Chess Group", at least for the moment.

Aagaard's blog post also announced that a new imprint, called Chess Elevation, will begin in the second half of 2025. This has already been registered according to the find-and-update.company-information site used by aoc.

Everyman (and various other entities, such as NiC) was bought by PlayMagnus, who then seemed to get bored of it all and sold to Chess.com, who don't do publishing and have now sold to Quality Chess, who have their own (quality) way of doing things.

Maybe that's the plan, but as far as I can see this hasn't all happened yet.
Quality Chess UK Limited (UK SC327356) is now owned by a new entity Squared Thinking Ltd (UK SC808375) with Jacob Aagaard as sole owner, so the structure is in place. But where Squared Thinking was/will be inserted in the hierarchy remains to be seen. Maybe the paperwork needs to catch up to reality?

Dated 2024.10.17, so maybe they read chesspub?  Smiley

I happened to see two upcoming books for December on the chess.co.uk website: Strategic Play with 1.e4 by Milos Pavlovic and The Tricky Tromp by Richard Palliser. Both are published by Popular Chess, a name that I didn't immediately recognize. A look at the pdf samples for both books showed their typography and layout are essentially identical to what Everyman has used for years. There was a rumor online that Everyman's new name would be Popular Chess, so that rumor appears to be correct.

Thanks for clarifying the acquisition-not-merger stuff, Jonathan.

As I understand it, there will be ebooks of some sort, but in a more secure format than just ChessBase downloads, which can be up on the Torrents within a day of going live.

And this too... But isn't the torrent scare yet another reason to give loyal customers a notice and a final week to make any half-planned purchases? At least for ebooks that are not newly published?

The alternatives for me going forward are Forward Chess, Kobo or Kindle. But the Everyman ebooks are priced a bit higher (except compared to Forward Chess apparently), so a final purchase there should mean a few pence more for the authors of my wishlist ebooks (who happen to be a certain N. McDonald and a certain S. Collins), right?

It wasn't a merger exactly. Everyman (and various other entities, such as NiC) was bought by PlayMagnus, who then seemed to get bored of it all and sold to Chess.com, who don't do publishing and have now sold to Quality Chess, who have their own (quality) way of doing things.

I had similar thoughts and ordered an eBook I had been considering for quite a while from Everyman in late June, a couple days after the merger was announced. However, like Stigma, I didn't expect eBook sales to be terminated so abruptly.

Seeking more information, I checked out Jacob Aagaard's interview on the Perpetual Chess Podcast.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naYdtXJPN2s

He states that the books of the merged company will be available in all formats, but it isn't clear to me if he was referring to the company's new books going forward or to existing works as well. One other comment I've seen from AAgaard in multiple interviews or press releases is that the Everyman name won't be carried on since it's a trademark leased from Random House. Perhaps it's simplistic thinking on my part, but could the Everyman eBooks become available again once they're updated to reflect the new name that's coming for that former brand? I must admit, however, that this optimistic hope seems contrary to the email Stigma received.

One other tidbit of note from the podcast is Aagaard's observation that Chessable has come to dominate the market for opening works. That doesn't bode well for the traditional opening books that have been the topics for countless entries on this forum.

Same here.

Everyman offered Kindle (and/or Epub), CBV, and PGN formats. No one else offers so many electronic formats.

If you want an Everyman title in a playable form, you might be able to find it at Forwardchess.com. Many of their new titles are available there, and some of their old titles also. I suspect they intend to make more of their old titles available on that platform over time.

I think Forwardchess is a viable alternative. It's very good. It's only failing is that you can not add moves and comments as you can with a CBV file imported into ChessBase. On the plus side, you never have to confuse your analysis with the author's analysis.

I import many games into Chess Opening Wizard (COW), a position oriented data base. For me, a Kindle or Epub file works well. I put the "book" (Kindle or Epub) on the left of my screen. I put COW on the right of my screen. I can play out the moves from the book onto my chessboard, copy and paste comments, and add my own comments and moves.

Even with these alternatives, I was planning on buying a couple more Everyman eBooks.

I got an email from them earlier today saying "eBooks will no longer be available for sale on Everymanchess.com" and directing subscribers to buy their eBooks on Kindle, iTunes or Kobo to get epub versions.  Embarrassed

I had a sneaking suspicion this might happen with the recent merger, but the abruptness of it is a bit shocking. Why not give loyal customers a fair warning!? (iChess and chess24 at least did that before shutting down, though on the flipside much of their content may now just be lost to potential new viewers, which is sad.)

Am considering a complaint here, as there were a couple more Everyman ebooks I was planning to buy soon.

Clicking the "Help" tab gets you a 404 error page.

Hopefully nothing dire.

Well I browsed their website and couldn't figure out how to add a paperback, either. The "Add to cart" button is nowhere to be found. Other shopping sites can deliver the paperbacks but not the ebooks. So I am lost as well.

Does Everyman Chess still publish eBooks? I browsed their website today and found no way to add an eBook to my cart.
