If Quick Chess is the one on a 5x5 board, then no, it's not a "good" game in itself. The small board means the pieces come into contact too quickly, there's no strategy involved.

I'm a little doubtful about the teaching value as well. Having taught chess to youngsters, if they are not ready for the full game then better to just wait another year. Most of the difficulties are social anyway. In a supportive environment young minds are surprisingly quick to pick up the full game.

I followed your search suggestion and got to the "QuickChess" page. I am not all that good a player, but I would not recommend it at all. The reason is that it doesn't use a full set of pieces, or even a full board. So, it really isn't chess, IMHO.

Instead I would suggest Jeff Coakley's, "Winning Chess Strategy for Kids." This is what my first book was and it teaches alot. I know that "for kids" might make you roll your eyes, but if you are a true newbie it is a great book. And get a full size chess set too.

Hope this helps,

Hi, I'm a beginner chess player and have this "quick chess" game which is designed to teach chess. I was wondering if this "quick chess" would actualy make a good, balanced and playable game in itself? Obviously I could play it but I'm not very good at chess and probably wouldn't be able to tell. So I'm asking good chess players their thoughts.
I can't seem to upload a photo or post a link here but the game can be found by searching "quick chess" on "boardgamegeek" site.
