aoc - Thanks for the explanation. I was wondering how Google gleaned the subject was chess from the single sentence involving "les skid" since no mention was made of it.

I'm not surprised you weren't able to reproduce the mis-translations. Here on chesspub I only quoted some relevant snippets, but for the translation I was doing chunks of about 4000 characters at a time (Google has a limit of 5000). The extra context means Google "knows" the subject is chess and thus knows the most popular terms to substitute.

There is another hazard, which is that Google "knows" me and "knows" you, so we can get different results based solely on that, regardless of the inputs we provide. In a similar way it's harder than ever to get wide ranging query results from a browser search. The search engine keeps filtering the results for what it "knows" the user already wants. This was happening even before AI entered the picture. I often used startpage.com to compensate for google search personalization. Now I wish there were similar for other search engines.

Nothing wrong with ChessBase including defective technology in their product, as long as it's optional for the user. It would be unacceptable in a business context (although not all purchasers of business software would agree!), but for consumer software a great model is to get something/anything working quickly, then improve it over time.

aoc - I share your combination of amusement and concern. As I mentioned in another thread, I saw a video interview of ChessBase's senior programmer, who pointed out AI's hallucinations when it was used to generate a plan from a given position. He gave me the impression that AI wasn't ready for prime time yet, but within a few weeks, the new ChessBase 26 was released with that same AI feature.

I tried to replicate your results by trying translate.google.com on the lines from the two transcripts.  My results weren't as funny/worrisome. The translations were more or less literal with no attempt to substitute some other chess-related term. Thus, "je vais utiliser les skid pour identifier les parties qui m'intéresse" was translated to English as "I will use the skids to identify the parts that interest me", while "j'avais les noirs et c'était une un gambit bord a" came out as "I had the blacks and it was a gambit edge a".

ChessMi training : Créer votre propre série "devinez le coup".
https://youtu.be/NBSob17Otaw

I've been watching a swath of French chess videos on youtube. I understand French but sometimes I want to save a large chunk in English and for that I use translate.google.com. The results are not good
  • Speaker : j'irai utiliser, uh, Scid pour identifier les parties qui m'intéresse
  • Transcript : je vais utiliser les skid pour identifier les parties qui m'intéresse
  • Google : I'm going to use Chessbase to identify the games that interest me

  • Speaker : j'avais les noirs et c'était un, uh, un Gambit Morra
  • Transcript : j'avais les noirs et c'était une un gambit bord a
  • Google : I had the black pieces, and it was a King's Gambit

What youtube is doing is fair, when it encounters a word it doesn't know it inserts something phonetically similar.

But google is plain wrong, just substituting the most common word without even trying to be accurate. These types of "AI" (read ML) hallucinations will be a plague on humankind.

RE the phonetic transcript, the funniest one I've seen is a ChessBase video with an English speaker and a German transcript -- I assume because that author usually records in German. That transcript is wild! "choose black" => "shoesmith". Smiley Click more... and then Show transcript. Again, no knock on youtube there, I just laughed.
