atie - I don't claim to be an experienced player, but I will note that Chess Publishing's position search feature indicates IM Watson has covered this line with 4...Qa5 in two French updates: June 2023 and October 2024. The former gives a brief history of the line (played by Uhlmann 75 years ago!) and broad coverage of the ensuing variations, including the one you refer to as the main line. (He suggests meeting 8.Qe2 with 8...f6). The latter update examines the continuation with 6.b4!? instead of the 6.Nf3 move in your line.

There doesn't appear to be much other coverage of the 4...Qa5 variation. I didn't find anything in ChessBase's Opening Encyclopaedia or with the Modern Chess position search. Chessable does have two Lifetime 1.e4 Repertoires (by Giri and Adhiban) that include 4...Qa5. They both recommend 7.b4 instead of the 7.Bd3 in your main line. You can use Chessable's Opening Explorer V2 to delve further into the recommendations if you're interested.

I was wondering about the theoretical status of the early Qa5, specifically 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. c3 Qa5.

I found out about this move because the Dutch player Eline Roebers played it twice recently, and some surface level analysis made it look like a fairly nice (and sound!) surprise weapon. I couldn't find any blog from IM John Watson that mentioned this move, though I doubt it has gone under the radar.

When looking at the lichess database, the game seems to follow what could be considered the main line (5. dxc5 Qc7 6. Nf3 Bxc5 7. Bd3 Nc6 8. Qe2), and Black's position looks fairly comfortable. I was wondering if there are any more experienced players that could share their thoughts on this line?
