The Foxy openings Video on the Leningrad deals almost entirely with Nc6 and then Ne5, and Chess Theory volume 3 from Sept 1993 from Luccioni. And the Informator booklet of Gurevich.

I'm not sure, but it seems that Dragonslayer (in that thread) = Michael A. Jensen, the author of the NIC articles I think MNb refers to
http://www.newinchess.com/Archives/SurveysList.aspx?AuthorID=1090 ;

So he should know what he's talking about, I guess.

You're correct. Dragonslayer=Michael Agermose Jensen.

Yes, there is a lack of a "modern" book on the Nc6 line.  McDonald's book is ok but a lot more comprehensive in terms of content (but no verbals) is the 1994 sl EDITRICE book by Massimo Luccioni. It is more up to date than Bellin's book (or Harding's exellent book, De Vault's, Ehlvest's or Ivkov+Skoko's efforts). Of little use is the 1997 book by Hall + Cartier (Hays).

Neither Pedersen, Beim or Kindermann have the Nc6 line in their books, though all 3 books are well worth having. Wink

Viking,

Oscar De la Riva's "Defensa Holandesa (Leningrado)", Evajedrez 2001, has got a chapter (16 pages, after 8.d5 there is coverage of 8... Ne5 but not 8...Na5) on 7...Nc6 (but two chapters on 7 ... c6 and several more on 7...Qe8).

I guess such a relatively slim coverage  may not give you much you did not already know but I'll be happy to copy the pages for you if you would be interested.  To give you a flavour the author thinks that a game U. Andersson - J. De la Riva, Pamplona 1998, which continued 9.Qb3  is troubling for black (at least if U.A commands the white pieces)

Best wishes, Sören Jensen

ps ... så kläm nu i med en verkligt sju-sjungande vals!

Btw, Bellin's old "Winning with the dutch" seams to be another possibility - although that may be hard to find... Have to check it out.

Hittade nyss en sajt för bokletande, men tyvärr verkar Bellins bok vara hiskeligt dyr nuförtiden! Cry

Takk Knut!

The thread you found was interesting not only for Nc6!? but also for the dutch system as a whole...

Seams like McDonalds book is the only one covering 7-,Nc6 to some extent (besides NIC), is still easy available AND to a "normal" price...

Btw, Bellin's old "Winning with the dutch" seams to be another possibility - although that may be hard to find... Have to check it out.

Hi again Viking

I haven't got it myself, but it seems that Neil McDOnald's book "Dutch Leningrad" covers 7...Nc6. See chapter 4 in this table of contents (from https://www.niggemann.com/Buecher/4037.html). Amazon.co.uk probably has it too.

008 Bibliography

009 Introduction

017 1 Main Line: 7...Qe8 8 d5

032 2 Main Line: 7...Qe8 without 8 d5

048 3 Main Line: 7...c6 8 d5 e5

057 4 Main Line: 7...Sc6

080 5 White plays an early b2-b3: Standard systems

093 6 White plays an early b2-b3: the Leningrad Stonewall

104 7 White plays Nh3

121 8 White plays c2-c3

134 9 Odds and Ends

142 Index of Complete Games

He also briefly mentions the Nc6 variation in his starting out book on the dutch. It might be the most aggressive black choice.

Thanks Mnb,

I will have to dig in the archives to try to find that "lost" thread then...

When it comes to NIC yearbooks....; I dont own any of them (too many sicilians++ that i have no interest in...) but isnt that just a collection of commented games? Or is it on a level like articles in e.g. the SOS books?

Both Schwarz, 1964 and Taimanov, 1980, treated 7...Nc6 as the main variation. I also remember an article in one of the NIC-yearbooks. It has been debated here, but the thread seems to have disappeared. Taimanov gave 8.d5 Na5 9.Qd3 c5 10.Bd2 +=, Bykov-Tolusj, Leningrad 1956. Iirc it was TalJechin, who showed up with an improvement for Black.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Initial moves:
1.d4 f5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bg2 g6 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.0-0 0-0 6.c4 d6 7.Nc3...

"All" Leningrad books seam to only cover the main line 7-,Qe8 (which is the line I play today btw)  Huh
Are there any books covering the tricky(!?) alterternative 7-,Nc6!?
