Another thought - you are not trying to use this function whilst a training question is active ?

No

Peter Rhodes wrote on 02/11/10 at 23:54:46:
Secondly - have you tried turning off training - "Disable Training" and see if you can move backwards and forwards within the database after that ?

Yes, it works then.

They must have somehow fixed one thing and broken another.

Bonsai, is it possible that you've lost the hotkey association ?

In the Chessbase tools bar towards the top right of the game window there is an icon which looks like a "right arrow". If you hover over it with the mouse a tooltip will appear "Load next game from database". Try clicking that to see what happens.

The button does not work. But only if I am using random training, while it works when I am going through games in a normal database (then F10 also works fine).

Also, you could go into customise - and make sure that the hotkey is mapped correctly.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the idea, but the problem really is that the functionality doesn't work, not that the hotkey is not associated with it.

It used to be so nice to practice your tactics, solve a problem and skip to the next problem...

Well, what I have got now after doing the update is that in random training mode I cannot skip to the next training problem with F10 any longer. In contrast F10 to get to the next game (or search result) still works fine for anything except for in the random training mode. This is most annoying when you want to do your daily tactical training... Has anyone else seen this one?

Steffen Giehring contacted me and advised me to install SP3.

After doing so, this bug was fixed.

The update is available at http://www.fritzserver.org/updates/cbm/c10.exe

Thankyou to Steffen for prompt service to this issue.

Thankyou Milen for posting this thread and also for the research you made in being able to recreate the problem.

I have too suffered from the same issue, and up until now I was at a loss to explain why this was occuring. The only sensible explanation I could come up with was that I had bound a hotkey to "delete variation", but even that explanation was inconsistent with the fact that an empty variation "[]" was being left behind as a tell-tale sign that something in chessbase was going very wrong.

I have sent an email to Steffen Giehring of Chessbase and I have linked to him this thread. I hope that he can sort this out soon.

From what I can see, many chessbase users have lost many hours of work. I am really very suprised that this one slipped past UAT (if they have any).

Sadly, online updates do not work any longer at my system from the very first minute of Chessbase 10 (the online update function always told me that my program version is update to date, whether true or not)

Yep, me too! I also get the updates from CBM. Roll Eyes

This is strange. I have experienced the opposite. From the first day I installed CB10 it will update my version every time and then it updates exactly the same version every time, again and again. The support couldn't understand it.
Actually I have got a lot of questions in return om my issues but they never have come up with any answers that actually has solved any problems.
Seams like the solution is to wait for nxt update and hope that the issue will be solved some how. If it not will be solved at next update then - bad luck!

What kind of proof is that?

Hi, for me also online update for CB 10 does not work. Since the first days i got the program it always says "program is up to date".
I got this update from their support. I had some problems downloading online Mega updates, so I contacted them and they adviced to download the latest SP installation form their server (they provided the URL). I got it from there and this is the result. Today I got response that they know about this bug and it will be fixed in the next online update... Who knows when... So till then I can not work on my analysis and database because i extensively use this null move feature. I tried to restore my backup ( I always make a backup of the Cb folder before new installation) but it does not work any longer. It shows some strange menus, headings etc... Complete mess.
I did not received yet CBM 132 but when i got it (may be ina  day or two) i will try to install that SP2 just to be able to continue my work until we get more stable new version.

Thanks for sending this warning. It's really annoying to lose hours of work this way.

My system software list also shows that a CB10 Service pack 2 is installed, but the CB10 program says it is from 2009 Apr 15. The bug with the null move game is not happening to me. - I hope you are in contact with CB support to resolve this issue. After all, it seems to be relatively easy for them to reproduce.

I was always wondering about their version management at Chessbase, especially now that there are "service packs" for Chessbase 10. It seems there are still many more versions of the program around besides and between the service packs. Sadly, online updates do not work any longer at my system from the very first minute of Chessbase 10 (the online update function always told me that my program version is update to date, whether true or not), so my only chance is to occasionally install updates/SPs from Chessbase magazines. (So my present version is from an earlier CBM, don't recall which one...)

Just checked that the latest CBM 132 comes with a Chessbase 10 Update where the update file c10sp2.exe dates from 2009-May-15.
So out of curiosity: How did you receive the newer version of July 10? Through online update?

Chessbase 10 Service Pack 2 bug

Hello guys,
I hust want to warn you that the latest CB10 SP 2 (About dialog shows CB version 10 July 2009) has quite an annoying bug. It may destroy your databases, so please make a backup before you make anything with your databases.
In short what is the bug - try the following
1) create new database or use existing one in CBH format
2) start a new game
3) enter some moves and then insert a null move at the end as a main line (for example 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 null)
4) then insert 2-3 sublines at the level of the null move (for example 4...Bc5 and 4....Nf6 or even 4...Nxd4)
5) save the game and close the game window
6) u will see in the game list that your game has some symbols like v, vc, vs or something like that depending on what you entered
7) now open again the game. You will see that your variations dissapeared Cry

This is the way how I lost 4 hours of hard analysis work on a very interesting line...

My biggest problem arose because i decided that something is wrong and started integrity check, which totally damaged my database.
Later i tried the same just for testing and after i saw the same result, simply opened the database in CB9 and everything was there  Shocked.
So be careful and always make a backup of your things.
