If White wants a Saemisch in the ..0-0 before ..d6 move order, it seems to me that he would play 5.Be3.

Or 5.Bg5 or 5.Nge2, depending on his repertoire.  But the point is that there is no reason to commit to f2-f3 yet when the Black knight can't move to the g4-square.

Thanks for the quick reply. So if White wants to enter a Saemisch he should go 5.Nge2 (I'm assuming this is what you meant by 4.Nge2)? In that case, Black has avoided the Q exchange in the 6...c5 7.dxc5 dxc5 8.Qxd8 line...which is something I'm interested in.

BTW, what I meant by "future-GMs" was that they were not yet grandmasters when they played the games...not that they weren't currently GMs.

Aagaard is a GM.

If not d6 but ...O-O according to Watson Whute gets an edge with Bg5

and if White wants a Saemisch then 5.f3 is not best. Golubev gives 4.Nge2 as better.

Hi! Anyone have anything to say about:

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 O-O (as opposed to the infinitely more popular 4...d6) 5. f3 and now 5...c5?

After a brief skim with a database, I noticed some future-GMs like Aagaard and Zapata have tried it. I was playing around with the idea of avoiding the Q exchange that arises when White accepts the pawn in the 6...c5 line.
