In Astana 2001, Kasparov played the Tarrasch against Gelfand. Gelfand chose the solid 4...Qxd5 line but Kasparov was first to surprise with 8.Re1!?

For the record the game started 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 c5 4.exd5 Qxd5 5.Ngf3 cxd4 6.Bc4 Qd6 7.0-0 Nf6 8.Re1!?

This line looks very dangerous for black but with best play I belive black can secure a good game. However against Kasparov, all Gelfand could play for was a draw at most after Gelfand's positional queen sac.

Of interest is also the game Hracek-Lamprecht where black never had a chance.

Hracek's friend Oral also used this move to trash IM Kristjansson in their match but that game hasn't made it to a database I believe.

Any suggestions as to what might be black's best in this line?
