I tend to have better results with 3... Bf5 than 3... c5.
Maybe as a caro kann player i am more comfortable with not locking in my bishop (as you frequently do with best play from white in the 3... c5 lines). Furthermore, White can play 4. c4! against 3... c5 which Rublevsky did awhile back.

Since I like 3. Bf5 I'm worried about this 4. g4 move... after spending so many hours solving 4. Nc3 and (recently) 4. Be3, the last thing I need is yet another hyper-ambitious try from White. Sad

I like the NCO recommendation with Martin's Qd6 move. seems quite decent at first glance. Better than the Bd7- h5-Bf5 maneuver which seems rather counter-intuitive ...

As it turns out this is the start of a variation given in MCO.  Martin has more detailed analysis on this if you are a subscriber.  Incidentally NCO also gives 4...Be4 5.f3 Bg6 6.e6 fxe6, but doesn't mention the stronger 6...Qd6! as given by Martin.

I have played this in two games and have won both of them. The system is stunning when the opponent is not prepared for what is coming at him. 4.g4 though playable seems in the end too fast. The attacks that come together in speed chess are nothing like what you are able to get in longer time controls. Often in longer games it becomes more sedate with white often being the one to wait for a mistake, behind his huge space advantage. It seems that this space can be converted but good defense does usually stifle the oncoming pawns. Things become locked and white is usually sent reeling. Though this was against opposition that was far above me in speed chess. In the first game I smashed a 1500 with a kingside attack. In the second I locked the kingside and waited patiently on the queenside while Black tried to do something (he was rated 1900-ish at the time). I was playing initially for a win then my opponent wiggled his way around and then I was playing for a draw, finally he left a piece hang and couldn't hold.

Overall analysis, excellent for speed chess and anyone you know that you can surprise. If you are a slash and grab player this may look like the opening for you, but if you can't adapt to the possibily if a push-and-pull positional game, look elsewhere.

I am also interested in the 3...c5 lines, but after 4.dxc5 I prefer 4...Nc6 (I liked the lines given by Gallagher in "Starting out: The Caro Kann".)  As for 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.g4 Bd7 5.c4, I think an interesting continuation is, 5...h5 6.gxh5 Bf5 but I have no idea if this is any good.  Any thoughts?

Hi,
I'm a Caro fan. Against Advance variation, I started use the interesting (and not iper-analyzed)  3...c5! Now White is trying the best answer and plan to fight against it. So far I achieve good results with the line 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.dc5 e6!? 5.Be3. But I am facing also with 5.Nf3 that is a good choice for White.
Are there  players interested to these lines?

   I am very interested in the position after 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 e5 Bf5 ( 3...c5!) 4 g4 !? as played by Morozevitch in the latest update.
The move and full idea eg 4...Bd7 5 c4 etc dates from Tal but has anyone any more information ,analysis and games to draw on ?

One more reason for preferring 3...c5 perhaps ?
