	Since McDonald has published some nice game with 10....dxc3!? 11.f4 b6 in his May update, I add here one more post. I think 12.Nd4! is quieter and safer (for White!) than 12.Ng3!? White doesn't recover his c-pawn but uses tactical blows: 12.Nd4! Ba6 (what else?) 13.Bb5+! Bxb5 (13...Kf8?! 14.Qh6+ Rg7 15.Qh8 Ng8 (15...Rg8? 16.Nxe6 and mat to follow) 16.a4 threatening Ba3 +-)) 14.Nxb5 Qc5 15.Nd6+ Kd7 16.g3! Nbc6 17.Qd3 Qd4 18.Ke2 and now if 18...Qxd3 19.Kxd3 Black can't move strong knight on d6 and if 18..f6 then 19. Qa6! threatening to mate queen and stronger than 19. Qxd4 Bus-Sorensen,Copenhague 1990 I don't see what's Black strategy after the simple: 13.Bxa6 Nxa6 14.oo where White has good blockade with his knight on d4 square. 	The poisoned pawn variation is probably dubious from blacks point of view. Today its rarely seen in top-level play. However its extremely complex. White has the bishop pair and an extra pawn (and one of them is passed) So what is blacks compensation? Well, he has an extra pawn in the center. In addition and this is the main point, whites king is stranded in the center, and this makes it in mating danger. The placing king also disrupts whites play and coordination of pieces, especially the rooks that doesnt get connected. Black often has to make risky sacrifices in order to penetrate whites position. I personally play it as black with mixed results, so if there are some competent players of either sides here, feel free to to post their experiences and views. The line 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 c5 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3 Ne7 7.Qg4 Qc7 8.Qxg7 Rg8 9.Qxh7 cxd4 10 ne2 bd7 11 qd3 bxc3 12 nxc3 seems most popular. After the almost obligatory moves 12...a6 13 rb1 the big question is wether black should castel long or play rc8. Neil Mcdonald says that 0-0-0 is the mainline now. Black of course must play 13.... na5 before he do that because of the trick 13 .....0-0-0 14 Qxa6! wins. But playing through french-experts Nigel Shorts blitzgames on ICC, he always choses not castling but rather pressure in c-file with rc8. That line was played a lot in the good old days for example by GM Uhlmann.

	Me posting on a French defence topic - I'd neved expected to see this day. But in my search for something decent to play against 1...e6 (2.Qe2 and 2.e5 are not replies to base your defence on it would appear), I've been studying the Winawer recently. There's no reason to fear here - black has play, but it's not clear cut. The main move after 9...cxd4 is 10.Ne2, which makes sense - white wants to get pieces out. However, there's a seldom-played line which I presonally prefer, getting the queen out of the way with 10.Qd3. It's possibly not strongest, but it seems sound enough. Still, I wont inflict my home-brewed analysis on the general public. After 10.Ne2, black almost invariably plays Nbc6 (dxc3 is sometimes seen too, but can transpose and is quite innocuous. The main line then runs 11.f4 Bd7 (dxc3 is another line, but again can transpose. Also Bd7 seems stronger) 12.Qd3 dxc3 and now white has three main choices, 13.Qxc3 , 13.Rb1 ??? or 13.Nxc3 8). All three are playable, my preference is obvious, but objectively Rb1 is probably the strongest. White's position I find preferable - I could be wrong though. 	After 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 c5 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3 Ne7 7.Qg4 Qc7 8.Qxg7 Rg8 9.Qxh7 cxd4, what is white to do? I looked over this position and did not like it at all. Initially I blundered (and didn't even realize it) with cxd4. However, upon closer inspection, I am unaware of what white should do and feel that black is better. Perhaps someone could illuminate the position for me? NeX iRae
