Superb book!  The book is 208 pages, but the pages are big and the print is fairly small.  The printing format is similar to Play the Najdorf by Emms, but the writing style is a bit different.  For one, instead of using the "variation tree" approach, he uses an illustrative games approach and I think he really makes a case for this approach.  He is light on variations, but his choice of games is dead-on.  There is a lot of textual commentary, but I think this actually adds greater efficiency to the presentation.  He provides an excellent groundwork for a repertoire which can become basis for independent research.  Of course, there are some missing lines, but he explains the ideas so well, you can often fill in the details without major difficulty.  One thing I noticed was that Gallagher left out the possibility 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0-0 6.Be2 e5 7.0-0 Na6 8.d5 Nc5 9.Nd2 (or 7.d5 Na6 8.0-0 Nc5 9.Nd2) as recommended in Play 1.d4! by Palliser, in which the play is of a different character from the lines he covers in the Petrosian section.  This is very minor and I certainly think this black is OK, but I think this emphasizes the importance of doing your own research, even with a good book.  The important thing is a good book like this really gets to the heart of the important lines, and gives a guiding map through selected parts of the King's Indian labyrinth.  Highly recommended!

I got my copy yesterday, and gave it a look over.  I played over the games in the Fianchetto section (which will be the most immediate use to me), and he presents a clear picture of what's going on.  It does have one usual weakness of the complete-games format, that the most important variations are often in the notes; it wil be some time before I can tell if it has the other main weakness of that format, that in practice you can get move-ordered right out of the repetoire.

I very much like that he uses mostly main lines (the Mar del Plata variation, for example), rather than relying on sidelines in many places, as most repetoire books seem to do.  I could wish that he had a backup line againt the Saemisch in addition to the 6...c5 pawn sac; that would be more use to me than the backup line against the Classical (7...Na6).

5.Nge2 looks well-handled at first glance (he recommends delaying castling, which seems pretty straightforward).  I didn't notice 4.Bg5, but I wasn't looking for it;  I'll bet it's in there somewhere.

I've ordered Joe's book 2 days ago, and can't wait for it to arrive. Could the people who own the copy divulge some more information? Is his book just on the "main lines" or does it include offbeat lines like 4.Bg5 or 5.Nge2?

And how long is the book? I find it hard to believe it's 144 pages! Seems a little short, but it's probably just right.

Hurrah!,  My copy also arrived from Amazon, so I can finally put the stress balls away!

I guess there were no real surprises when it came to the repertoire, but I was very glad to see ...Na6 vs The Classical getting coverage as well.

I just hope that White players don't respond to this book by running away from the KID, although then I guess Joe himself would be happy to be commissioned to write 'Beating The Anti Kings Indians 2'!

main line of classical Nc6. Nh5 vs Bayonet-main lines. also gives Na6 classical; c5 vs Saemisch (Andrew Martin's book wrongly says this is not popular- it is the Saemisch that is not popular because of c5); Na6 Averbach, c5 4pawns, Gallagher/modified Gallegher vs fianchetto. basically, it's all the best lines theoretically

Hey, since you've received the book, would you very kindly do everyone a great service by telling us what lines gallagher recommends against the classical, samisch, bayonet, averbakh, four pawns etc.?   Smiley

how many pages is the book anyway? It  can't be only 144 pages as stated on the web site right?

My preordered copy arrived from Amazon yesterday. I couldn't put it down. Joe is such a lucid engaging writer. He believes that everyone benefits from text explanations as well as agebraic annotations, no matter what the readers rating.
The book does contain a lot of things Joe has written about in other works, however it is advantageous to have verything together, plus the new updated games.
He provides a repertiore with options and fall backs in case something gets refuted any time soon. This is a must for KID players.
Gambit has a new Understanding the KID book due out in May.

The book is excellent. It is VERY up to date- it has games from the FIDE wch in Tripoli in it. Many of the lines/games are from his other books.

That's very good news! =)
Thanks a lot. Although I'll have to wait a bit longer, as some books that are out now in Sweden (Mastering the Najdorf and English Attack by Tapani Sammaluvo to name a few) aren't on sale on amazon.com yet! (Which is where I buy most my books)

But I can wait a while longer! Smiley

Well, after Joe utterly crushed me with the King's Indian last week he told me it was coming out 'next week'. So you shouldn't have too long to wait. Hopefully there won't be time to get Cox-Gallagher into it......

Hi!

Does anybody know which lines he is recommending in the book (particulary against the Sämish)?

I have been searching for info unsuccessfully.

I have e-mailled Everyman Publications and it turns out that the book is delayed until October.

Better get the stress balls out!

I have Gallagher's "starting out: the king's indian" and love it so I am excited about his new repertoire book.  I don't suppose someone could mention to Gallagher that we'd like to hear about the status of his book?  Roll Eyes

I have pre-ordered it off Amazon, but I have no further info.

However I was wondering myself what happened to future releases on the Everyman website!
