Steffen Pedersen's The Main Line French: Nc3 is a Gambit publication from late 2001.  He doesn't offer any lines after 16 ... Rh8, and, according to www.chesslive.de, it doesn't seem as though anyone has tried it yet.  It might be worth bashing some pieces around the board to see why Rh8 is better and how the game might proceed from there...

Hi Hgman,

What is the year of the book your reading? Maybe this is something Neil will have to add to his next version of the winawer roadmap. Hopefully his book will be updated as well. The actual game referred to took place in 1995. I'm guessing neil updated his winawer road map in the last year or so.

According to Steffen Pedersen, Farago prefers 16 ... Rh8 and only after that can Black continue with Rc8.

What do I do? Avoid the whole question and play Geller's 8.Bd3. But I suspect this is not the answer Chess2003 was looking for.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Like Keenu Reeves in Speed when faced with a life and death decision "What Do You Do?"

In this case what is better than RC8. In Neils Roadmaps he says that Farago says RC8 is wrong. So, What Do You Do?

[White "Leko, Peter"]
[Black "Farago, Ivan"]

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 Ne7 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 c5 7. Qg4 Qc7 8. Qxg7 Rg8 9. Qxh7 cxd4 10. Ne2 Nbc6 11. f4 Bd7 12. Qd3 dxc3 13. Nxc3 a6 14. Rb1
Nf5 15. g4 Nfe7 16. Rg1 Rc8...The game ends in a draw.
