Quote:I was wondering how to play as white against the Falkbeer counter-gambit ? I recently tried what I thought was a healthy main line as white and run into 8...Na6 before being thoroughly crushed...This move looks like a hard nut to crack
One of my fellow clubmate told me 6.Qe2 (instead of 6.Nf3/7.Qe2) was a refutation, but 6...Bb4+ 7.c3 0-0! looks quite good for Black.
So any idea is much welcome at the moment
Thank you for your help !

Howdy, I've been away to Ireland for a couple of weeks which is why I haven't posted much for a while.
Anyway, it seems strange to feel despair in this particular line as 7...f5 is known to be dubious and for good reason.
In the game white could probably improve with the standard moves 9.Nc3 or 9.Bxc5 Nxc5 10.Nc3 as 10...0-0 11.Qe3 Nxc3 12.Qxc3 Ne4 13.Qd4 keeps the gambit pawn without making much of a concession. - Whenever, despairing in the KG the first remedy after thinking for oneself of course, is to check with fritz!

Especially since the computer is seldom influenced by post game depression...
Another alternative of equal strength is 8.Nfd2 when black will hardly have time to consider Na6... e.g: 8...0-0 9.Nxe4 fxe4 10.Be3 +=. Here Schlosser-N.N. went 10...Qxd5?? 11.Qc4 1-0
