If you want a 2011 Grunfeld book you have 2 choices

1) Better: Avrukh's books, Quality Chess

2) Chess Stars (Delchev). Ok, but some weird recommendations. Positive side: One volume and perhaps more friendly format?

For understanding Grunfeld, Rowson's is best, but it is certainly VERY DATED now.

Can you be more specific - which lines do you think are weird?

As seen in another thread, Avrukh's repertoire isn't really faring any better than this.

The good news for White is that there are many alternatives that give a nice, playable game. The bad news is that there's no single line that gives white a clear edge against best play.

Rather too dismissive of White's chances, I would say.

Black is in a fine shape. Even in a line discarded above as bad for black (7...0-0 8.Be2 c5 9.0-0) Black is doing very well with 9...b6. Even the silly-looking 9...Qa5 is far from harmless.

There is nothing unsound about it, but in two critcal lines, White is having some problems demonstrating an advantage. One is 8.Rb1 0-0 9.Be2 cxd4 10.cxd4 Qa4+ 11.Bd2 Qxa2 12.0-0 Bg4!, the other is 10...Nc6 11.d5 Ne5 12.Nxe5 Bxe5 13.Qd2 e6 14.f4 Bc7!. I think that in a weekend tourament setting and the like, it remains a good method for White, assuming that he wants to learn a good deal of theory.

There are still a few ELO 2500+ GM's who play it, with mixed results. Pelletier lost twice with 8.Rb1 O-O 9.Be2 in Biel, but that might be because of his clearly stronger opponents.

Apologies for bumping an old thread but thought it was better than creating a single topic new one.

My question is whether this Grunfeld repertoire still holds up in 2011? Or the core of it at least, I don't mind spending some time updating some of the critical lines as long as it's not a complete overhaul.

Thanks

Indeed, life was easy before Kasparov. You only had to have one book Botwinnik/Estrin.
Adorjans book was also not bad. There was a second edition where I think Gutman?  covered all the new stuff on the Sevilla-variation.
For those who fear the Carlsbad structure after 4.Nf3/5.Bg5 get Rowsons book for a good explanation how to handle this.

7...O-O 8.Be2! c5 9.O-O and black doesn' have enough pressure e.g.:

9...cxd4 10.cxd4 Nc6 11.Be3 Bg4 12.d5! +/-

see Yermo's Road to Chess Improvement for more details.

also note that 7.Be3 O-O is fine as black can play a quick Qa5 more or less forcing Qd2 transposing (I tried gamiting recently but it didn't turn out too well)

7...0-0 where? the main line was supposed to be 7...c5 ?

What are you talking about? same book?

Worthless? WHY? (It is free to criticise, a little harder to REASON your arguments...)

I have been playing the Grunfeld as black for 30+ years. Life was easy before Kasparov started playing it!

I found Edward's book a very good summary of the current state of the art... even though there was little in the way of new things for me.

From the black side of things I found it useful to have an idea of the problems I may face if I switched lines (I play and obscure line that has given me a performance well over 400 points above my rating, but unfortunately is no good). The coverage is good AND NOT BIASED, a good thing in my view.

Grunfeld books are not that common and most are truly horrendous, possible the worst could be Lalic's and Adorjan's is currently pretty laughable. Many lines, you switch Fritz on and +- immediately. But Adorjan's was a better effort than Lalic, just books at that time were much worse...

Problem is also what a book adds to current databases. In that respects Dearing's books is excellent....

Regards,

F.

Hi guys,

Sorry Markovich - I am not quite sure I understand your point.

In answer to ArKhein's question, yes the Grunfeld is still entirely playable. The 8.Rb1 line offers an advantage in many lines, however there is still a lot of unexplored territory, and several variations merely give rise to unclear middlegame positions.

Although the book is written partly from the White perspective (in the sense that it is a White system) the dominant purpose of the book was to explore the critical lines in the Modern Exchange Variation from an objective perspective, offering suitable coverage to make it useful for both colours.

Each illustrative game is followed by a brief conclusion, and there are also summaries at the end of each chapter, pointing out where White is doing well, and where Black's defensive resources are causing problems.

I hope this helps. Thanks for the interest,

Eddie.

The argument for buying such a book as this is stronger when the book is against one's system!  What you see in a repertoire book you will very often see on the board.

No, fortunately Tiviakov does not play the Grunfeld,  Grin however I have been informed by those nice people at NIC that Glenn Flear will be reviewing my Grunfeld book in the next NIC Yearbook, which will also include my reply to Tiviakov's criticisms of Play the Sicilian Dragon.

Edward,

Thanks for your response...

We used the Grunfeld exclusively when facing 1.d4 in the recent CSS/PAL Freestyle Tournament. Interestingly enough, the game in question occurred in our final match against V_Dobrov.

Needless to say, we didn't play 24...Qg1+?? We did however manage to draw the game.

I would say that your book helped play a part in our success.

Thanks again,

Helicon

Wink Must admit that in my tedious grinding moments I still quite like 4 Nf3 and 5 Bg5 Smiley . Not sure though that it troubles strong and experienced Grunfeldites; hence why I've been busy working on 7 Nf3 and 8 Rb1!
50% will do me Eddie, although I've been finding theory sinking in much easier than, say, in a Poisoned Pawn - largely due to a number of model games and all the good positional explanation.

Good spot Helicon. I am not sure why that is in there. That is how the game appears on chessbase, however obviously there was an input error along the way. I'll mention it to Quality Chess, and give you a mention if there is ever a second edition!

Actually I am quite surprised that this was not picked up. I was trekking in Asia when Challenging the Grunfeld went to print, so unfortunately I never received a prior copy of the proofs.

Thanks again,

Ed

Do you no longer trust the 4.Nf3/5.Bg5 lines in your Play 1.d4! Undecided?

I guess strong players know how to handle the Carlsbad structures with Black but at my (2150-ish) level, it is surprising how often Black can drift into passivity.  Hence the popularity at this level, too, of the Exchange QGD.

Stop moaning Rich - there isn't that much theory to learn!  Grin The book just covers several different options against most of black's responses. If you chop it right down you could probably get by with only a carefully selected 25% of the book (as White - as Black obviously you need to be prepared for each of white's responses).

I remain pretty impressed by Eddie's book, but was wondering if - for those of us with poor memories/seeking a second weapon - there were any promising alternatives at the moment against the Grunfeld. A 2005 TWIC search of 2500+ games revealed that Black appears to be in quite good shape, with the majority of fianchettoes and Russians (4 Nf3 Bg7 5 Qb3) leading to draws. Sutovsky's games always demand a look and it was noticeable that he was only struggling a little in one line: 7 Nf3 and 8 Rb1!.
Ergo it looks like you've just got to learn the stuff and go that way, albeit a very well guided and explained path these days.

I have a question regarding the game Kramnik-Svidler, Korchnoi Birthday Tournament, Zurich 2001

This game can be found on page 111

The game quoted went 24...Qf1+?? 25.Kg3?? Qg1+?? 26.Kh3 Qf1+?? 27.Kg3 1/2-1/2

Was this actually played during the game? Or a just type-O?

One great aspect of this book (along with a lot of new analysis) is that the auther includes many solid conclusions regarding the theoretical state of all the lines covered. I have found this extremely helpful when studying this system.

Keep up the good work!

i don't mind "shameless plugs" too if in that way authors give a preview of what lines are/are not covered.

In my area and most parts of the world, it is not easy to find a decent shop selling chess books (I imagine for MnB the situation is much worse!?), so ordering through the internet is the only way. Unfortunately the lack of information is a hindrance, which is especially felt in the case of repertoire books.  Embarrassed The publisher's blurb has not always enough details, and not many publishers have the habit of putting up the contents page on their web site. Book reviews on the net are also slow in coming.

That said, Eddie's book is clear enough on what it offers. Speaking as a fully paid-up member of the White Grunfeld--Slaying Club, this book must be a definite buy!

Incidentally, I think I speak for a lot of forum devotees when I say that we don't mind shameless plugs at all, as long as the corollary of that is that we get the sort of excellent 'after sales service' that (to name but the ones who come to mind immediately) Eddie, Richard Palliser and Thomas Johansson have provided on their recent books, in terms of questions answered and further analysis.  In fact, it is a real win-win for authors and punters alike Smiley

It is a nice thought, that you spend 132 pages on a type of opening play, which is disapproved by for instance good old TopNotch: gambit.
I remember, that Janos Flesch about 20 years ago published a light book, in which he recommended this gambit. I tried to keep track, but gave up in 1993 or so. It was too much for a patzer like me.
Pity, that I am not entitled to buy your book according to Silman. My ELO is far beneath 2200... Tongue

Hey guys,

Sorry to give such a shameless plug, but I just wanted to mention that the new Grunfeld book is in shops now.

The first official review can be found at:
