I can tell you that no Benko player dont like the Nf3 variation in the Benko. As an example I can tell you Karpov creamed Topalov after 3Nf3 (1993 iirc). Karpov tells that Topalov didnt like it as he was pushed from an agressive opening to a defense

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

@Willempie

Yeah, you're right.  It would have just transposed, but I suspected that's what he wanted so I tried to give my opponent a position that he would be as unfamiliar with as I am.  It seems that my response (cxb5 and e3) is at least playable, but I don't know if it was best.

If I am not mistaken 5 d5 would be a semi-declined Benko again, which has great annoyance value for black.

This is sorted under symmetrical english (1.c4 c5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.d4 - A31). 3.Nf3 in your move order is not a ?!-move although many players like to play the black side after 3...cxd4 4.Nxd4 e5. In "Big Database 2004" there are 16 games with 3...b5 with a statistic of +11 =3 -2 for white. This could be compared to 3...cxd4 which has 4898 games in the same database.

Don't check me with no lightweight stuff.

Hi,

I just played a tournament game in which, as White, I tried to avoid the Benko and go into an English via:

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.Nf3?! b5?!.  I have no idea what the name of this opening is, what its status is or anything.  The game went well for me (see below), but is there any theory on this stuff?

White:  Me
Black:  A class "B" player

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.Nf3?! b5?! 4.cb5 a6 5.e3 cd4 6.ed4 ab5 7.Bb5 Qa5+ 8.Nc3 Nd5?! 9.Qb3 Nc3?! 10.bc3 Ba6 11.Ba6 Qa6! 12.Ne5! e6 13.c4 Nc6?! ( I expected 13...d6)14.Nc6 Qc6 15.0-0 Be7 16.d5! (I love to play d5!)  Qc7 17.de6 fe6 18.Qf3! Ra4? 19.Bb2 Bf8? 20.Qh5 Kd8 21.Bg7 (tough choice between this and Qf7, but this was far more easy to calculate) Bg7 22.Qg5+ Ke8 23.Qg7 Rf8 24.Qh7 Qc4? 25.(I need to learn how to put in a diagram, cos this starts a pretty combo!) Rac1! Qa6 (forced) 26.Rfd1 Rf7 27.Qg8+ Rf8 28.Qg6+ Rf7 29.Rd7 Kd7 30.Qf7 Kd6?  and White forced mate on move. 36.

This game hasn't been "fritzed", so there may be some tactical errors here.
