Alias,
concerning line A you were dead right - BLUSH!! (I somehow mixed up with 10. Nxf6?!, which happens quite often in blitz matches, but surely doesn´t really challenge the black side. After 10. Bxf6 Bxf6 11. c3 so far I have only looked at ... Ne7, and have not bothered to check out on the main lines. It might be a good idea to read the first book before buying the next one.

I am still interested in Rogozenko thoughts about the line
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e5 6.Ndb5 d6 7.Bg5 a6 8.Na3 b5 9.Bxf6 gxf 10.Nd5 f5 11.Bd3 Be6 12.c3 Bg7 13.Nxb5!? axb 14.Bxb5.

The chessbase statistic is highly in favour of white and I have won a couple of games blitzing on the net.
After 14. ... Bd7 15.exf white has tactical chances against the black kingside and three pawns for the piece. Most of my games were decided after the advance of the two pawns on the a and b file. With this advance, pressure against d6 and with tactical threats on the kingside against Xf6 after Qf3 or Qg4 white has very good attacking options.

How should black react against this? Imo the attempt to exchange the knight with 15. ... Nb8 16.Bd3 Bc6 17.Be4 Bxd5 might be a good idea, because it reduces whites options. Black should be better if he gets a chance to activate his blackfielger Bg7. Any other ideas, what does Rogozenko think about this?

Lou: Am I missing something? Line A is a very common line. Yakovich has three chapters on it! Line B is well covered in Rogozenko's book. 6 pages or so.

In general, Rogozenko's book seems to be much better than Yakovich's one.

Hi,
I am a happy owner of the Yakovich book and I wonder wether it is worth buying the book of Rogozenko on top of it.
Yakovich doesn´t mention the current lines

A) 9.Nd5 Be7 10.Bxf6!? and
B) 9.Bxf6 gxf 10.Nd5 f5 11.Bd3 Be6 12.c3 Bg7 13.Sxb5!?

I face line A very often in real and internet games, as it seems to be the daily special of various super gms.
When playing against the Sveshnikov I want to play line B.

Does anybody know wether Rogozenkos book covers these lines? What are his recommendations?

Good question. 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 e5 is the Kalasjnikov/De la Bourdonnais, which often can transpose into 4...Nf6 5.Nc3 e5 (in Russia called the Tsjeljabinsk Variation, but also Lasker Variation has been seen) 6.Ndb5 d6 7.Bg5 a6 8.Bxf6 gxf5 9.Na3 and now
a) 9...d5 is the Pelikan or the Pilnik Variation.
b) 9...f5 Janovski Variation
c) 9...b5 is the Svesjnikov Variation (also 8.Na3 b5).
As the latter is by far the most popular, all lines after 5...e5 are often dubbed Svesjnikov Variation.

thanks very much for the enlightening info. Shows how much theory has been generated over the years. A sicilian book i thumbed thro when i was still in school showed  the Pelikan (among others) & it stopped only at 5....e5. Look where we are at now!!

The number of transpositions and cross-polinations in these ...e5 openings for Black is really astounding.  I'm guessing that's why it's so popular at all levels.  It really is a great way to introduce yourself to the open Sicilian proper!

Pardon my ignorance  Embarrassed Been seeing a lot of Sveshnikovs,& Kalashnikovs being discussed in this Open Sicilian Section. From looking at the move order,  they sure resemble a Pelikan. Are they the same things?? Or are their move orders similar but their strategic & tactical goals completely different from the Pelikan?

Aha. Well, I can proudly say, that I own two chess books - on the Blumenfeld Gambit and the Scandinavian - written in Swedish, though I never have studied the language. Book is a big word though - about 25 small pages. They are written by A.Hildebrand and Bo Jonsson respectively.

No, but I only own (chess) books written in languages I have studied, i.e. books in swedish, english and german.

"Is Van der Wiel an Sveshnikov expert? I didn't know that."
Shame on you. He started playing it as a teenager in the 70-ies. Van der Wiel was also the inventor of the name Kalasjnikov Variation (but not of the idea itself).
IMO every serious Svesjnikov player should have Van der Wiel's book. Alias, you do not own chess books in Swedish only, do you?

I received my copy of Rogozenko's book today. It looks very good. Whereas Yakovich book tries to live up to its title, this book is written from black's perspective. Obviously I can't write a full review already, but I'm impressed so far. The lines I've checked seems to be well covered. The book even includes my CC finding of 15.-Rg6 on p. 258. "Black has excellent play across the entire board...". Indeed.

Well, books in dutch might not be what  CheckMate was after. There has been many books about the Sveshnikov. Even older books, like the one by Krasenkow I learned the variation from, should still be useful. Although the opening is very popular and many lines are changing, I haven't see any completely new ideas in the Sveshnikov in the last few years.

Sveshnikov wrote a book about the subject in the late 80's.

Is Van der Wiel an Sveshnikov expert? I didn't know that.

No, there are THREE major works on the market dealing with the Svesjnikov. The third one is

De Sveshnikov Bijbel, Het Pd5-complex
by expert GM Van der Wiel
15,70 Euro
publisher Schaaknieuws

See eg http://www.cybergate.nl/debestezet/

I can hardly think of anyone, except Sveshnikov himself, who is more entitled to write on this opening. It is a pity, that part 2, on The Bxf6 complex, not has been published yet.

You'll probably need only one. Go for Rogozenko's one. It's more recent, it has more pages and Ari promises that it much better than the (rather good) book by Yakovich. It's also cheaper.
