'American Rugby' does sound like a much better descriptive name.

- Which reminds me of an old Michael Moore 'documentary' (for lack of a better word) in which he proposes that the USA should rename itself simply 'The Big One', (which should supposedly deter all enemies of the US). Furthermore, he also wanted to change the national hymn to some tune people will remember the lyrics of, i.e. 'We Will Rock You'! Cheesy

All three suggestions sound like good ideas imo, so I suppose none of them will be realised...  Cry

Testing...

wow, the broncos sure did get lucky on thanksgiving. don't worry though. jake will be back to his old interception throwing ways just in time to choke away the division in december. go chiefs!

p.s. the rest of the world prefers soccer because the rest of the world has horrible taste!

I've seen the newspapers in foreign countries distinguish the American game from the beautiful game in two different ways:  They often call it "American Football", and sometimes call it "tackle football".

Comparing American football to Aussie rules football or rugby is akin to comparing baseball to cricket or cricket to rounders.  The similarities are superficial and the differences are essential.  (Boy, I feel like I was just channelling Michel Foucault there!)

Injuries are playing a key role this season! Look at New England and now the Steelers! As for the Colts....they have yet to be tested! The only real threat they have faced to date has been an injury wrecked Pats squad!

As of this moment, despite their injuries, I like the Steelers! I belive when the COlts & Steelers meet later this season (Rothlisberger 1st game back from injury) it will be a foreshadow of the AFC Championship! Remember no dome team has ever won a bowl...I hope this stat holds true this season! GO STEELERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. 'American Rugby' is kind of off! When I was in Europe last winter I mindlessly mentioned football to to some European friends to which soccer became the topic...when I mentioned American football they replied 'OHHH GRIDIRON!' So gridiron it is..................

Well, after another week (with two games yet to play), the Indianapolis Colts are undefeated, but they have the heart of their schedule ahead of them.  The Broncos have lost twice (both away games, as expected, but not to the teams that I would have expected), and the Steelers need to beat the Browns in one of the toughest rivalries in football to keep pace with Denver and Cincinnati.

In the NFC, the races are much more interesting because this year there are so many good teams and no great team.  Almost every team can still hope for some sort of play-off.  There's only two teams, the Chicago Bears  Shocked and the Seattle Seahawks that look comfortable.

Here's my pick for the 5 best teams in the NFL at this moment:

1. Indianapolis Colts
2. Denver Broncos  8)
3. Pittsburgh Steelers
4. Seattle Seahawks
5. New York Giants (despite their ugly loss to Minnesota)

ESPN analysts recently voted for their top five teams in the NFL.  The following isn't a scientific analysis of the poll, but reflects about where the averages lie:

1. Indianapolis Colts (7-0)
2. Denver Broncos!!! (6-2)
3. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2)
4. New York Giants (6-2?)
5. Cincinatti Bengals (7-1)

Let's go horseys!  (A Bronco, for those who don't know, is a an unbroken colt.  So, is a colt, a broken Bronco?)

Another week has passed, and the Broncos look to be the second best team in the NFL.  As much as I love my Broncos, this may be a false impression.

The Broncos are one play away from being 7-1 instead of 6-2 going into their bye week.  The rest of their schedule looks much easier than their first half of the season in which they faced Jacksonville away, NY Giants away, and both of the Super Bowl finalists at home.

But, the second half of the season has us travelling to Kansas City (one of the most difficult places to win), Oakland, San Diego, and two other games.  We still have to face Buffalo, the NY Jets, Dallas, and Oakland a second time.  We have a week to lick our wounds. (Champ Bailey's hamstring injury will take much more than one week to recover.)

Indy is clearly the class of 2005 so far, bt there are many unanswered questions both about Indy and many other teams.  I don't see a favorite coming out of the NFC unless the NY Giants use their last second victory over use to springboard into first overall.

Right now, my picks for the top teams in the league are:

AFC:  Indy, Denver, Pittsburgh, New England, with Cincy and an undetermined team to also make the play-offs.

NFC:  (Right now):  NY Giants, Detroit, Tampa Bay, Seattle, with Philly and Chicago being the likely wild-card teams.

I am far more confident in my choices for the AFC than the wide-open NFC.  Dallas still looks good as do a number of other teams.

My sober, unobjective pick for the Super Bowl winner, half-way through the season is the Colts.  But I am rooting all the way for the Broncos, who have played extremely well at times and could beat anyone at home and almost anyone away.

What do you all think?

Fightingbob,

I agree that the Colts are in the driver's seat right now.  My main hope is that the Broncos win homefield advantage as the second best team in the AFC and some other team knocks off the Colts before falling to us!

As far as rules changes go, the beauty of soccer is that it's extraordinarily simple.  Having said that, FIFA is constantly tweaking the rules.  Two classic recent examples have been rules regarding how goalies are allowed to receive passes from their defenders and more crucially, deciding that if a player is "even, he's on-side."

After Tottenham scored the game winner at Old Trafford (which didn't count because none of the refs saw it) I hope soccer goes to instant replay the way hockey has.  By the way, why is it that Old Trafford refs don't seem to see fouls and goals that would hurt Manc? Angry

That's just about the most important rule change I'd like to see in soccer.

The single law of soccer that I love the most is that the referee has tremendous leeway to determine whether play should be stopped.  American sports would do well to allow our refs the same latitude.  (Although the arbitrary way offensive holding is called seems to be one mechanism refs use to even up bad calls.)

At this point the Colts look to be the best team.

Though I played soccer and not football in high school, I still prefer to watch American football.  Soccer is fun to play, but very boring to watch.  In my opinion, the willingness of American sports leagues to change their rules to create a more exciting product has been wildly successful.

Soccer is long overdue for some rule changes to increase scoring and encourage skillful offensive play.  I suspect the international governance of soccer (not unlike chess) makes such changes difficult.  Though I don't really know much about
this subject.

It's Sunday night, and as I speak, the previously undefeated teams in the NFC both lost to AFC teams.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers couldn't beat an over-the-hill replacement quarterback in the Jets' Vinny Testaverde, and the Broncos beat the former Bronco.  That is, Denver managed to keep Washington's Clinton Portis from killing us.

So, as things stand (with Jacksonville leading Cincinatti, 20-13), Indy is the only team left unbeaten at this moment.  The Broncos have recovered nicely from their first week embarrassment to the Dolphins and have even discovered a few new talents, especially in their CornerBacks!

I have no idea what happened to the Eagles that they got trounced by Dallas.  It wasn't just a matter of the right match-ups, the Cowboys seemed to have eaten their Wheaties this morning (the breakfast of Champions, as Vonnegut fans may know).

The AFC looks something like this:

Indy
Denver
New England
Pittsburgh (Maybe)
Cincy (probably)
Chiefs (maybe)

and the NFC is waaaaay too early to call, but:

Tampa
Philly (anyway)
Atlanta
Da Bears (I can't believe that one though)
Seattle (looking like an easy pick again)
I have no clue who the last wild card will be.  There are so many teams in the chase that don't deserve a play-off berth....

Maybe the Cowboys, Redskins, Giants, or Cards!
