I've been playing the English Defense more and more against 1. d4.  If White goes in for the "main" lines, then it's a real hoot even if I am theoretically worse, and chances are I'll know those lines better than White.  If he dodges that broad pawn center, I usually end up with a "good" Dutch Indian with my QB fianchettoed, so in either case, I'm happy.

When i was a very a french advocate all the time not just the way i bring it out once in a while now. I played the Queens Indian/Nimzo. This was the way i thought about it: I can play both by starting out 1...e6. This may cause my opponents to play 2.e4. Then the other reasoning behind it was that they were both similar in fashion to the the french. Start off solid and then go for counter play. Karpov is one to check out in the queens indian for the counter play. He could make this seemingly inocous opening be a defence for those with blood in there eyes!

On another note. A buddy of mine plays the english defence against d4 starting with 1...e6. Some times it will transpose into a dutch but a lot of the time it wont.

So i wish you all the luck in the world in findind somthing that you are comfortable with. And if it happens to be the Chaotic Kings Indian i welcome you to the world of over the board violence and another section of our awesome forum. And who knows maybe a on a whim you might check out the Budhapest which may be not 100% sound but it sure is a lot of fun to play.

"Why play chaotic chess as black all the time?"
Because it warms my blood. That is why the IZ is my choice.

Uhlmann plays the KI iirc Wink

QGD or Main line Slav (Not the semi one Wink ) may prove to be balanced. Why play chaotic chess as black all the time? Cheesy

elspringer : Not everybody pushes the pawn to d5..., but I love modern benoni. I mean MB it's hard to study and difficult to get.

Thx

I play the KI to add to the confusion. I think it depends on how you play the french. If you are like me a Winawer addict, then the Nimzo or KI would suggest themselves. I like both, but settled on the KI as white cant avoid it.
I dont see much dissimilarity between the french and KI, much less than between the KI and the dragon anyway. Both the KI and the french are about pawn structures, it doesnt matter that the specifics are different. How many times do you see the bishop from c8 play its role and how many times do you see the g7 bishop perform? They're both bad bishops, but somehow they manage.

Nimzo is no bad choice for Frenchies either.

My vote goes for one of the QGD set-ups.

I know that the QGD Tarrasch is a second-best opening, but it is thematically very similar to many French lines (especially the French Tarrasch with 3...c5).

I really like the Orthodox QGD with the idea of pushing ...c5 when possible.  It's what I usually teach my students.

However, I personally love the Slav.  I don't have to worry about the bad Bc8, so I'm happy.  Others play the Semi-Slav and play the Burn/Rubinstein variations in the French.  I guess it's just a matter of taste.

The KID is not such a strange choice, as soon as you mirror the pawn structures.
My choice though is 1.d4 e6 and whenever possible 2...f5; 3...Nf6; 4....Be7; 5....o-o; and 6...d6;

Hi Frenchies! What against 1.d4?

I have got a second hand copy of Ulhmann's book from Amazon. This is my first contact with the French. What a book! It could be compared even with Zurich 1953. But my question is: what do you play against 1.d4?

- Some say KID (but it seems strange dark-light sq)
- Some say Dutch (interesting)
- Some say QGD (maybe the best option)

What do you think? What opening suits better with the french?

Thx
