Thanks for all the love guys!

I'll try and find some answers and write some reviews when I get a break either this weekend or over Thanksgiving break (11/23-27).

That book was written when Kasparov was using the Tarrasch with very good effect.  Under that spell, if I recall correctly, it advocated not the Rubinstein system but 3. Nc3 c5  4. cxd5 exd5  5. Nf3 Nc6  6. Bg5.  And actually, that is not such a bad way of meeting the Tarrasch.

I suspect you're thinking of Raymond Keene's 1. d4 repertoire book, the first edition of which came out circa 1984.  It definitely recommended 6. Bg5; I can't recall Pedersen/Burgess or any other book doing so.  After giving 6. Bg5 a try, my impression was that (not too surprisingly) Keene's treatment of it was too optimistic.  I think it could be annoying for Tarrasch players to face, though, as it seems to reduce Black's winning chances to approximately zero.

@smyslov_fan: i'm also going off-topic! care to tell me more about Queen's Gambit for the Attacking Player? What lines are recommended inside? its quite dated now, but I don't mind getting it if its good...

@SF

Sorry for being off topic. I would love your review on The Semi-Closed Opening in Action by Anatoly Karpov;  You might consider opening  a new thread in general chess, where we can discuss all books not relating to a particular opening.

JEH:I would say a White player armed with Aagaard/Lund is more deadly than a White player armed with Palliser/Dunnington  Wink it does not make sense to get those repertoire books for the single game they provide against the Tarrasch, i do not think they add very much. If you want latest theory there is always NIC/Chesspub.

Somewhat oddly for a repertoire book, Aagaard/Lund seemed to have done a comprehensive survey of the entire Tarrasch defence, since they covered all Black deviations like Hennig-Schara and 9... c4. Not that I'm complaining as a White player!

Thanks Smyslov_Fan. I've got Fighting Chess but haven't touched for many years. I'm scuttling off to my Library now  Smiley

There are other books that may interest you on how to play the QGD Tarrasch as White:

The Queen's Gambit for the Attacking Player by Pedersen and Burgess;

The Semi-Closed Opening in Action by Anatoly Karpov;

Fighting Chess by Garry Kasparov;

All of these books give ample analysis of the "Rubinstein Variation" of the QGD Tarrasch.  There are also plenty of well analysed games in collections which show some classic examples of good play for White.  In fact, with such a wealth of information about how White can get an edge I am surprised to find that some people still play the Tarrasch without coming up with something new!

So, just to be safe, I supplement my understanding by reviewing recent games and reading the forae here.

Thanks for the Tip on the Aagaard book. I often look at books written for the "other" side and it looks like this would be very useful.

Do the repertoire books add much to what is covered there?

I play only the WHite side of the Rubinstein Tarrasch and used Aagaard/Lund's Meeting 1. d4 alot. This book is suitable for the White player even though it is aimed at Black, as the authors give a detailed explanation of the plans for each side, and seem objective in their theoretical assessments (at least for a repertoire book!).
The best parts of the book for me are on sidelines for both sides like 9...c4, and 9. dc5, which I didn't really understand until i read the book.

Most 1. d4 repertoire books recommend the rubinstein system (Palliser, Dunnington both recommend main line 9. Bg5/12. Rc1), but due to space they don't explain the ideas much.

Could you give me recommendations on good books about playing the Rubenstein system against the Tarrasch Defence as White?

TIA,

JEH
