I agree that, after 1 d4, 1 ...Nc6 is playable, but whether it's recommendable is, I think, another matter. There are two threads which discuss this in the Daring Defences forum. In one of them, I suggest that the critical line might be 2 d5 Ne5 3 e4 e6 4 de fe 5 f4 Ng6 6 Nf3 Bc5 7 Bd3!? followed by g3 -- a plan which nets White a big plus-score in the games on ChessLive. Do any of the works mentioned in the bibliography that Zarvox cites offer Black any solace here?

There's a great bibliography at
http://www.kenilworthchessclub.org/kenilworthian/2005/08/1nc6-or-kevitz-system-b...

The Berdichevsky book or CD may be your best choice, or the older Keene/Jacobs book. An up-to-date, well written book would be very welcome.

1...Nc6 is quite playable against 1.d4. Be sure to study the transpositions carefully, such as to the Tango (on which there is a great recent book by Palliser) or Chigorin.
