It seems the poll is becoming very popular (again) with the sicilian going ahead very fast. The hey days of the French seem to be very far away...

I voted Sicilian. Even though I've only played it a few times I'm planning on making it my main weapon soon.
Until now I've only used (with regularity) the Scandinavian with 2...Nf6 and the Alekhine but I don't like some positions in certain lines (particularly 3.d4 Bg4 4.Bb5+ Nbd7 5.Be2 and 4.Nf3 respectively).
I've also tried the French out a bit but I like playing against it a lot more Smiley

Since I came back to chess in 2003, I try to change my response each season. It went so:
  • 2003/4: French

  • 2004/5: Caro-Kann and Pirc

  • 2005/6: Pirc and Sicilian (Dragon)

  • 2006/7: Sicilian (Dragon) and Pirc

  • 2007/8: Alekhine (and I still do not know which will be my second choice)

Until a few years ago my favourite was 1...c5, but I lost interest in it due to the high frequency of 2.c3 and 2.Nf3, 3.Bb5.  I then migrated to 1...d5, but nowadays 1...e5 is becoming my main weapon.

Objectively speaking I think the best moves are 1...e5 and 1...c5, and that there's little to choose between them.  The French and Caro-Kann are only marginally inferior, scoring about 4% less at high levels.  The popularity of the French is good in my book, as I like playing against it.

Just get some whiteout and apply it to your screen.

No. If no one cared for 2 years...

Once it was the Alekhine - I played more than 80 over-the-board games with this and scored very well. I gave it up because of the Voronezh and never went back to it because it was also under pressure in other lines.

Now it's generally 1...e5 or 1...c5 over the board, but the French in correspondence chess; engines don't understand the French very well, so one can score very well with it in corres chess against players who are over-reliant on silicon help.

By the way, can someone PLEASE get rid of the apostrophe in the heading of this poll?

Funny, I never saw the original poll.  I just now voted "Alekhine" just because I'm studying and playing it right now.  I am rather sure that objectively, the best defense to 1.e4 is 1...e5.  But that wasn't the question.

I too am surprised that so many like the French.

I am quite surprised the French took the first place in this poll.
Is it still the favourite defense against e4 for this forum's members? (two years after it was started)

Same "problem" here....
I voted for "the Alekhine"; A defence that never stops to fascinate me. I know it is not the "best" defence though. But hey, all can't be playing the sicilian defence....

In my past e4-career "the french" was the defence that irritated me most- and thus also could have deserved a vote, I guess....

I would have the same question as alias above. I just voted for the one I currently play the most, dont necessarily think it is the best answer to 1e4 though.

Favourite in the sense that it is the one I most often use, or the one I consider to be the best? (It's not the same one for me!)
