I never thought I'd find myself spending time on this but the truth is, it does matter to me!
When I started playing chess, the only way I'd have my knights is facing each other, but I can't remember what I did when I exchanged one of them!
Anyway, the thing is, having my knights pointing somewhere else felt kind of "ugly" from an aesthetic standpoint (maybe because at an early age we tend to consider symmetry a perfect geometrical shape).
As time went by, I "evolved" and now the only way I'll have my knights on the board is facing left. Everything else looks kind of ugly to me, except knights facing each other, which sort of feels "well intentioned but not evolved, not sophisticated enough".
I actually tend to understimate players who have their knights facing each other!

(nothing to do with reality, of course, but that's how it feels to me!)
I had a few laughs reading thru this thread.
