I finally got around to try out SCID....
Have to say that my impression is that Markovich said it very well in the above linked thread:

Quote:
SCID is easily the best designed and it's free, but it does not really stick to doing one thing well, and I found its multi-window interface almost intolerable.

SCID seams quite powerful but the many windows is just irritating... Sad

Btw, so far I have only used CB-light - and been happy with that  Smiley

IMO you should go with SCID which is free and rock-solid.

In an identical topic titled "Chessbase vs. Chess Assistant" the thread-starter investigated all options and chose SCID in the end.  (!!!)

I have used nothing but SCID for database management during my progress from UNR ==> 1741 USCF.  If I received a free, full version of CB or CA I would not switch.  SCID is very powerful-- you can search by pawn structure, material count, ratings.... you can export comprehensive opening reports; the move tree handles transpositions (unlike CB)....  It can communicate with UCI engines like Toga and Rybka via polyglot.   And SCID is free...

get the Oct 2006 spellcheck file for SCID (this is to normalize spellings of player/event names to prune duplicates and also optimize search results):

There's a free light version of ChessAssistant too, so trying both and then deciding may be simplest for you. (Besides, the free versions though limited  may be all you need for quite some time...)

In my opinion, CB is easier to handle but more prone to crashing occasionally - while CA is the more ambitious program, but it takes more effort to learn how to use its extra options. Searching large databases seemed a lot quicker in CA, but it may also require a more recent fast computer to run it on.

I've used CB about 7-8 years now, while I've only used CA for a couple of months 5 years ago so...  Undecided

My choice was more due to circumstances - it was simply easier for me to buy CB than CA at the time.

Why don't you try the free ChessBase light program first? Also, the analysis engines like Hiarcs, Fritz all come with useful database facilities. Smiley
Incidentally there is another thread on this very subject that might be interesting.

Noddy,

I have found Chessbase to be priceless.  However, I only recommend such a database to my students if they want to do the research for fun.

There is no way a database, or the world's greatest computer, will ever make anyone become a really strong player.  Databases are merely tools, which in the right hands can help a player to improve.  If you want to have fun, have a good database, and have a user-friendly program that will give you lots of fun, the very best is...

Chessmaster.

You won't find many "professionals" using chessmaster because they need a different tool.  You have described what Chessmaster does best.  Chessmaster is versatile, is not prone to crashes, and is an excellent engine.  Its database is excellent for most needs.  It's also cheaper and easier to find than the others.

(I have no direct connections with any of the three manufacturers that I'm aware of.)

Chess Assistant or CHessbase...advice plz

I'M currently looking at getting either Chessbase or Chess Assistant. I need the advice of players who have experience with both products. I'M currently rated USCF 1625 and I'M looking for which of these two fine programs best suits my needs at this stage of my development. I need a little more then a database program. I would like to use  one of these products to assist me in my opening study, middle game/endgame studies as it relates to my openings of choice and general chess study.  Firstly, I have some basic requirments...so which is better as it relates to:

1) User friendly (I don't want to spend a good portion of my study time learning how to use a program because it kind of defeats the purpose of the purchase)

2) Stability (crashes, bugs, and other wonders of frustration)

3) Multi purpose (as I said above I need more then just a database)

I'M not asking which of these fine programs is better as both are good. I just need to know which one of these programs best suits my needs as listed for my stage of development. Thanx!
