kylemeister, I thought it was the opposite? (3. dxe4 = Rubinstein, 4. dxe4 = Burn). Never mind, I guess play ends up quite similar anyway. I like the games of the swede Emanuel Berg, btw. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=19787

I believe ...de after Bg5 is the Rubinstein; ...de on move 3 (played e.g. by Petrosian in some of his world championship/candidates' matches) is the Burn.  You know, Amos, the guy who couldn't keep his pipe lit against Marshall.

Is Korchonoi still playing French actively ? He used to in the past off course.

Anyway, Richard I didn't know you also play/interested in French. It seems that people who play Benoni (like me) would like French. I have your book on Benoni & Tango (Benoni is little bit more complex than the Tango which is fun and I am scoring good 4.5/5 with 1900+ players).

I think so, yes. That's what I call it, anyway.

Volkov's also a 100%, every time, guaranteed French man, which I like. But you're right of course, nothing wrong with Gurevich at all as a role model.

Gurevich likes to take on e4 in the line with Bg5 - is that the Byrne I am hopeless with names? A lot of GM´s seem to like this which is not my cup of tea really - but other than that you can follow his stuff against the Steinitz 4.e5, the Advance, Tarrasch, etc.  He also knows a bit about the Pirc, which is an interesting combination..

Gurevich favours the Burn, though, doesn't he? I sort of don't count that as a proper French somehow. Volkov's a real French man. Vaganian, Lputjan, agreed, but the OP wanted someone to follow today, and I'm not sure those two play so much any more?

Thanks, saubhikr, glad you like the Alekhine book. No real plans on the French (at least I might do something on the Winawer one day, but not for a while).

These are good guys ...but lets get serious:

1) Mikhail Gurevich - other strong GM´s look to him as a pointer in key lines, his deep preparation is legendary

2) Armenian GM´s Vaganian, Lputian whos original idea´s abound in many lines.

I will also suggest Volkov as the ideal role model.

If you like the Winawer, you can also see the games of many of the top Chinese players, who have taken to the French too with good results.

Volkov (my recommendation), Bareev and Akopian come to mind.

Who are the leading players who are playing French regularly from black side.

If we can prepare a list, enthusiasts (like me) can follow their games for recent ideas & new moves (may be from TWIC).
