Ohh I dunno Christoph - by the time your book gets published I'm hoping we on the forum would have already refuted 10...Qb6!?, much like what Radjabov did for the KID by busting the recommendation in Opening For White According To Kramnik - Vol 1b . So much for updated second editions.  Cheesy

Don't worry about not including 10...Qb6!? in the Bird's - I will give it a more exclusive coverage in my book about the Bird's Defence Smiley

Before you all get excited: I don't have a publisher yet; but I'll start anyway, maybe I'll get one sooner than I think...

However even with your busy schedule, I was hoping that a player of your considerable talents would spread yourself around the forum a bit more, especially as favorable reviews and impressions on this this Site are sure to boost book sales if ever so slightly.

Ok fair enough, although the wording of the original post did come across as a bit provocative. Generally I try not to spend too much time on internet forums (chess or otherwise), for the simple reason that I could very easily devote a great deal of time on them and not get anything else done! If I got involved in every topic here that interested me then I could easily spend all day at the computer. So instead I usually content myself with reading a few threads, but only rarely getting involved myself - with the exception of this one, which I sort of have to attend to regularly.

But anyway Toppy, today is your lucky day!  Cheesy I have just posted a message on the French Defence section (Steintz thread, page 35).
Cheers, Andrew

Two questions: What's the recommendation against the Schliemann and secondly is this the only thread that you contribute to?

I hope the answer to the second question is no, as that would be a bit too gratuitious and self serving don't you think.

I have occasionally contributed to one or two other threads, though of course my attention is mostly focused on this one. Is that gratuitous and self serving? I thought I was doing a good thing by giving up my time to answer questions about the book so I must say I'm a little disappointed to see such a cynical suggestion here.

Don't misunderstand Andrew I think its great that you field questions here on your book, in fact that and the way you annotated your game vs Peter Sowray in CHESS MAY 2006 VOLUME 71 NO.2 are just two of the reasons I ordered it.

However even with your busy schedule, I was hoping that a player of your considerable talents would spread yourself around the forum a bit more, especially as favorable reviews and impressions on this this Site are sure to boost book sales if ever so slightly.

I am pleased that you chose to extol on the virtues of the under-rated 4.d3!? as a potent weapon against the Schliemann in your recent book. Curiously when I advocated this approach over a year ago on this forum [CLIK HERE] it was met with more than a bit of scepticism.

I am glad that you have done so.  I see no obligation on your part to participate in other threads.    If you do so, it would be great, of course.

Again, thank you.

On the first question: 4.d3. A fine practical choice in my opinion.

I received my copy of "Play the Ruy Lopez" today. I only had the time to read the bird and Schliemann chapters. Both are written in great style with very deep analysis. The only minor point of criticism I've found: After
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nd4 4.Nxd4 exd4 5.0-0 c6 6.Bc4 Nf6 7.Re1 d6 8.c3 Ng4
9.h3 Ne5 10.d3

the interesting 10...Qb6, which is discussed lively on chesspub, is not even mentioned.

What is your recommendation, Andrew?

Thanks for bringing that to my attention Bernhard. I must confess that I had neither seen or considered 10...Qb6 in that position prior to reading your message. Would it be possible for you to post a link to the discussion? I would be interested to see the analysis of this move. I guess that'll be something to include in the second edition!  Smiley

As for my book, there was never any mention of cutting it down, even when it became very clear that it was going to end up on the long side.

Maybe you had a rookie editor who didn't know about the 160 pp. limit.  Unfortunately, I'm sure he's been sacked after this gaffe, and future titles will be pared down accordingly.

Question for Messrs Cox and Greet

How many books have you sold ?

I have the d4 book and will purchase the ruy soon.

Regards,

Andrew Brett

I have no idea how many have sold so far. I did speak to a guy at the London Chess Centre who told me it was "selling well", and they have had to order another batch from Everyman, which apparently is fairly good going for the amount of time it has been on sale. But other than that, I have no idea.

Probably because mine was a Starting Out book.

I assume that for some of their series, they will have page restrictions, while for others they wont. It would get a bit weird to have a "starting out" or "easy guide" book of 300 pages and a more advanced series like "play the whatever" with about 100.

PS I also very much like the suggestion in the intro about how to slowly expand this repertoire with the main closed and open lines.

Seems Topnotch found the variation I meant, so indeed it wasnt about 4.Nxe5 Undecided
Hopefully I get to try it out soon. My most probable opponent next week seems to play the Cordel I cant wait to unleash 4.Nxe5
