I'm with Willempie on this one : someone who can't come up with anything else than some running joke (Balkenende as Harry Potter) when asked on his 'view' on the Dutch PM's politics, while sitting on a pile of diplomatic reports, can hardly be considered intelligent. So it's very clear that these ideas cannot have originated inside De Guchts skull. On the other hand : there aren't any jokes on this circulating. So the real intriguing question remains : where did he pick that up ?

The statements he made in and about Congo (where he supposedly did something good) were even worse.

But to be fair, Belgium is in a limbo between international politics (UN), EU and their own internal problems. My impression is that they tend to act strong on international cooperation while bashing others who dont, to (amongst others) direct attention from their own federal issues.

Belgian politicians quite often make us Dutchies realise, that our politicians even could have been worse ....
If any nation would indeed decide to leave the EU, it would be a disaster for that country and a little, temporary shock for the EU. Think only of the tariff rates.

De Gucht is not so incompetent as it might seem. He is well know for his tough (not really diplomatic) language but the belgian embassies are very happy with him and he is quite successfull in his entreprises (the most known is the organization of demacratic elections is Congo).
About the Miniter of Budget I must agree with (I'm working in her administration): she is totally incompetent but she has very pretty legs Wink
And in general, belgian politicians are very incompetent but what do you want: about 50 ministers in a country with only 11 millions inhabitants, there must be some garbage  Embarrassed

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

De Gucht is an idiot. He has a history of diplomatic screwups, so much that it is even noticeable in Belgium (they have quite a lot of incompetents like a minister of budget who cant count). Eg after our referendum he insulted our PM directly under the excuse that if he would hold a referendum he'd get a yes. Strangely enough Belgium or Flanders never got a referendum...

Belgian Foreign minister De Gucht recently suggested is an interview that the European Union is in need of new rules, for the welcoming of new members as well as for the 'goodbye-ing' old members (my wording). This might seem strange at first sight, but upon a closer look I gound a perennial stumbling block to every move forward the EU wants to make... Not sure though how likely this is.
