Yes..it is probably as easy as that. Khalifman is following Anand.

But one could wonder why Anand doesnt play  9.c4 instead as it leads to a more difficult game for black.

So after seeing this ,,one starts to wonder WHY Opening according to Anand 9 says that white should transpose the game to a Sveshnikov by answering   8...Nf6 with 9. Bg5.

.....

Of course he could have some reason to recommend  9. Bg5

Perhaps it is because Anand is one of the leading experts in the positional Svesh lines with white. So he doesn´t need to bother with another minor Kalashnikov line in preparation.

I get the impression that the Kalashnikov is more or less refuted in the tactical main line 6.N1c3. At least according to Anand 9. Blacks best is probably to deviate to the  Sveshnikov if white does not plays  6. c4.

I even think that  black attempts to transpose to Sveshnikov by  8...Nf6 wont help IF white answers this by  9.c4 instead of 9. Bg5 (wich leads to a Sveshnikov). According to Aagaard & Pinski in their Kalashnikov book the game follows :

"9 . c4 Nd4  white can play     10. cxb5!? Nxd5  11. exd5 wich transposes to the lines      8...Nge7 9.c4 10. cxb5! Nxd5  11. exd5." With other words it keeps the game in Kalashnikov territory.

So after seeing this ,,one starts to wonder WHY Opening according to Anand 9 says that white should transpose the game to a Sveshnikov by answering   8...Nf6 with 9. Bg5.

Why do I think so ? Because according to Khalifman black has problem in the Kalashnikov  8....Nce7 and  8...Nge7 lines.

So I think Khalifman should have recommended  9.c4 instead of  9. Bg5.
Khalifman  doesnt say that the Sveshnikov is as problematic for black as the Kalashnikov is.

Of course he could have some reason to recommend  9. Bg5

Do agree. Played the kalashnikov meself for a good many games, up to maybe 4 or 5 years ago. Even made an appearance in McDonald's original book on the subject. Felt that it was getting dodgy theoretically and too easy for opponents to prep so twas decommisioned.

Like learning multiple variations of the Closed Ruy Lopez, it makes sense to me to learn both of these.  If you're not playing against super-GMs, then the Kalashnikov is just fine, and being able to use both would keep opponents off-balance...

Sveshnikov himself claims that the Kalshnikov is better then "his own" Sveshnikov" . But I dont know in what way the Kalashnikov is better.

Interesting, I understand now. How do you think it compares in soundness to the Najdorf, Classical and Kan Sicilians?

I think that it is the most popular at high levels, just after the Najdorf. So that's where I'd rank it.

So if you´re looking for a well established opening the svesh seems to be preferable, mainly because you have to deal with it anyhow due to the transpositional possibilities explained above.

The downside is of course that theory of the svesh has grown very fast in the past few years, but imo the essentials are easier than in all the najdor lines, perhaps comparable to classical and Kan.

Regards, Lou

I would go even further and say it is the "easiest" variation to learn. Only a few branching points for white and the amount of sensible moves is usually limited.

The Svesh is considered very sound and established nowadays at top gm level. I guess it is as reliable as the najdorf and scores brobably better than the classical and the kan.

I don´t now of an established line where black is under heavy pressure. Quite a few white players therefore try anti-svesh-lines with 3.Nc3 or 3.Bb5, while the ball is in whites court to improve on the main lines. BTW you´ll have to deal with these anti-lines in the Kalashnikov as well!

So if you´re looking for a well established opening the svesh seems to be preferable, mainly because you have to deal with it anyhow due to the transpositional possibilities explained above.

So you're saying that even the transpositions are not to the best lines of the S?

No I am saying that if white allows the transposition to the Sveshnikov, black's best option is prolly to take that opportunity, as staying in Kalashnikov territory scores badly. I play these lines only from the white side and I always play 6.Nc3 against the Kalashnikov, which works for me.

The 6.c4 lines are maybe better (I dont think so personally), but to me they seem exactly the sort of lines black wants if he opts for the K. In one of Nunn's "move by move" books, he shows a game where he as white gets blown away in this 6.c4 variation. That was enough reason for me not to bother with it.

The Svesh is doing well theoretically. I only think that if white is decently prepared you will get bored at some point, because you will get very similar positions each game. This is due to most white players going for the main line (me included), where the pawns always end up in the same way.

The K scores really bad at high levels. Just check games like Kasparov-Lautier and Bologan-Tregubov. And those are just the lines which allow a transposition to the Svesh.

So, what you're saying is to get the best game objectively, you need to transpose into the Sveshnikov anyway, so players are generally unwilling to have to learn the extra Kalshnikov lines, like those with c4?

Also, you say the Sveshnikov is doing really well theoretically. Do you think it's doing even better than the Najdorf, Classical or French Sicilian (1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 usually going to the Kan)?
