I also was extremely suspicious when I saw the game.
Ok, black won nicely, but you can't play that way against a strong player (let's say above 2400),
because he will kill you.
So I don't understand why somebody like Chris Ward who knows so much about the dragon plays such a bad variation. Perhaps he wanted to avoid white scraping a draw in the 9.0-0-0 d5 lines, which are much better, but also much more drawish than 9. ... Bd7.
So in a way 9. ... Bd7 is a good way to play for a win (or for a loss  Wink, depending on your opponent's strength).

Another very wild game with 9.....Bd7, the move that "just looks wrong".

Very nice game indeed  Smiley

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

About the line in the Tiviakov game, here is game from the ongoinng swedish championship between GM Emanuel Berg and IM (and soon to be GM) Pontus Carlsson. White diverted from the game by playing a4 instead of h4.

[Event "SM-gruppen"]
[Site "Stockholm"]
[Date "2007.??.??"]
[Round "6"]
[White "Berg, Emanuel"]
[Black "Carlsson, Pontus"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[ECO "B77"]
[PlyCount "53"]
[EventDate "2007.??.??"]

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 Nf6 4. Nc3 cxd4 5. Nxd4 g6 6. Be3 Bg7 7. f3 O-O 8. Qd2

About the Tiviakov game again , after many hours af analysing I discovered that there is a solution to the 19 Nd4 variation that I was worried about.

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6 5.
Nc3 Bg7 6. Be3 Nf6 7. Bc4 O-O 8. Bb3 d6 9. f3 Bd7 10. Qd2 Nxd4 11. Bxd4 b5 12.
h4 a5 13. h5 a4 14. Bxf6 exf6 15. Bd5 b4 16. Ne2 f5 17. Bxa8 Qxa8 18. Qxd6 Bb5
19. Nd4 Rd8 20. Qxb4 Rxd4 21. Qxb5 fxe4 22. hxg6 hxg6 23. c3 exf3 24. gxf3 Rd5
25. Qc4 Qd8

But white is probebly better in any case

About the Tiviakov game, what happens if white simply plays 18.Bxa8 Qxa8 19.Qxd6 Bb5 20.Nd4?
If Rd8 than Qxb4 attacking the Bishop.

Also about the move order, the blogger claims that is is a novelty.
But if white plays Bd5 first then b4 forces transposing to the game.

12 h3 is acutally playalbe. A player in my local club plays it and it is called "The Logdahl Attack".
But I agree that h4 is very good for white.

I think that Nakamura is a great gambler ( remenber his 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5) in the 9.000 Bd7?! game 12.h3? must be a fingerslip, 12.h4 is almost winning

Paddy,

Thanks for the link to some very interesting games!

Of course, only one of the games in the link was a high-profile Dragon, but it was still a fascinating drama.  (The title of the article translates to "Dragon Drama".)

I'm not convinced that the Dragon will ever be a regular part of any "Super GM"'s repertoire.  But as we remember from the Kasparov-Anand match, it will remain an excellent surprise weapon even in match-play.

And 2 from Nakamura at the US Championships:

1 1/2  with Black isn't bad. At least I'm not alone as a fan of the odd looking 9...Bd7 as in the first game.

Looking at the games from AeroSvit I noticed that Ivanchuk played the Dragon as black agianst Karjakin.
It would be intresting to know if he had found something in the critical line (h4 before Bh6).

[Event "Aerosvit-2007"]
[Site "Foros"]
[Date "2007.06.18"]
[Round "1"]
[White "Karjakin, Sergey"]
[Black "Ivanchuk, Vassily"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[ECO "B78"]
[WhiteElo "2686"]
[BlackElo "2729"]
[PlyCount "45"]
[EventDate "2007.06.18"]

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6 5. Nc3 Bg7 6. Be3 Nf6 7. Bc4 O-O 8.
Bb3 d6 9. f3 Bd7 10. Qd2 Rc8 11. O-O-O Ne5 12. Kb1 Re8 13. Bh6 Bxh6 14. Qxh6
Rxc3 15. bxc3 a5 16. a4 Qb6 17. h4 Bxa4 18. h5 Nc6 19. hxg6 Bxb3 20. gxh7+ Kh8
21. cxb3 Nxd4 22. cxd4 Qxb3+ 23. Ka1 1/2-1/2

On the subscriber section there is also a recent game where former WC Khalifman was black so maybee the tides are turning?

There are some notes to this game at

http://www.chesspro.ru/_events/2007/aeroswit2.html

and also notes to a recent Tiviakov effort at
