Do you suppose that the tournament taking place in Europe will favor the otherwise less favored European squads? This has traditionally been the case in the football World Cup, between east and west hemispheres. Could north and south hemisphere have a negative influence on the quality of the southern countries?

Difficult to see how, they are nothing like the team of 4 years ago. I hope the All-Blacks win, they have consistently been the best team in the World for as long as I can remember.
Still, the French are at home, and they haven't forgotten the football World Cup of 98!
You have a very short memory, Tony - there is absolutely no doubt that in the 12-18 months preceding the last World Cup, England were the strongest team in the world, with home and away victories against pretty much everyone and a Grand Slam to prove it. And there have been numerous occasions when the Aussies have been out in front.
Equally little doubt that over the last 12-18 months, NZ have been way out in front with only really the South Africans to challenge them.
However, there is just a suspicion they may have hit their peak strength too soon and they do have a sorry track record of choking. Meanwhile, the French have looked mighty impressive and - most importantly - solid in their warm-ups. Haven't seen much of South Africa lately but will be interesting to see how much damage they do to England in our group game on 14 Sept. [Could actually stop us qualifying for the next stage as Samoa are well capable of beating us at present and especially on the back of a physically bruising and morale-sappin battering by the Boks.]
And you must never, never, never rule out Australia - everybody said they were weak going into the last World Cup but they came within a whisker of winning it.
If sometimes we fly too close to the sun, at least this shows we are spreading our wings.

It's just not right to see the US in the Rugby World Championships. Oh well, I guess I'll root for them if no Commonwealth team makes it to the final!
(BTW,
Bernard Lagat
of the US just won the 1500 World Championship! I didn't think I'd see an American win before I retired from teaching in about 20 years!)

I guess Canada's in the group of death with Australia, Wales, Fiji, and Japan. It's difficult to bet against the Aussies and All-Blacks, but I'll take France and Ireland as dark horses...
