J how about complementing the c-k with the main line Scandinavian?

How about complementing it with a brimming tablespoon of sodium cyanide?  Seriously, the last time I played this defense was when I thought 5...gxf6 was viable.  That at least produced dymanic positions with winning chances.

Just some brainstorming, as I really have no experience with the c-k (though the chk rings a bell Wink).

If one gets bored, how effective is to introduce some variety in a c-k repertoire by chosing akin openings? i.e. how about complementing the c-k with the main line Scandinavian (e.g. the latter used only against a particular type of opponents)? Or when playing against the c-k advance alternate between (1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5) 3. ... Bf5 and 3. ... c5 (the latter resembling the French; a tempo down that is, but is playable), or the caro-pirc hybrid (c6 & g6 Gurgenidze) etc.? I admit this is a rather exotic option in composing a repertoire..

In the lgames in latest tournaments we have seen Ivanchuk and
Grichul playing the CK.

I dont think it is drawish.

The Caro is quite sound and not as dull as some people make out. Bareev and Dreev more recently have been the main players for Black.

OK what crime did you commit to punish yourself in this inhumane way?
Wink

Seriously though, I would say the CK is passive and that you can end up in positions where you are slightly worse and just have to sit them out. But very often you get good endgames, counterattacks and chances of getting crushed are slim. Basically it is an "equality first" opening. You try to equalise the game first and only then start doing active stuff.
So in short you will get some boring games and endgames at which you are slightly worse, but you will also punish a lot of overpressers and win a lot of endgames. Of all the first moves vs 1.e4 I think it is the safest and thus also chances of winning are less, but that it is easier to master than 1..e5. Plus if you get bored you can always switch and keep it on as a 2nd string defense.

I found it is very efficient against attacking players (they overpress often) and against people who find it difficult to make a plan.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

Hi wolfsblut,

this depends on how long you plan to play chess in future!  Wink

I guess CK is solid and will not be busted easily. It had the reputation of being drawish. The main trouble was that it was said that it is very hard for black to play for a win, unless white tries too hard to win.

What put me off the CK is that white has developed a lot of new dangerous systems against the CK in the last 10 years. Black has to prepare against each of this system. Too much work for too little chances according to me but I am weaker than you are.

If you prefer a slow developing and solid opening 1....e5 might not be best for you. How about the French or the dreaded 1...d6 setup with a likely transposition to a Philidor?

You could also try to reach a Panov through the ...Nf6 Scandinavian. Don't know though whether white has good possibilities to evade the Panov.

CK will never be refuted.

The most rapid changing theory in the CK I would think is in the advance 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nc3 - which requires study.

Get the book by Houska - although the panov repertoire suggested may be too bold. There are other more solid and most probably better panov alternatives available.

Caro-Kann for the rest of my chess-career?

Hi,
I`am looking for a solid and not so fast developing defence against 1.e4. I think about to play 1..e5, but I love to make 1....c6 work( because I like the idea to play the slav)....- is the Caro-Kann-Defence worth the study and to play for the rest of my chess-career (My rating is about 2180). I´am not afraid of defending and the idea to look forward to an coming endgame is nice. But is it to passive? Or like Mr. Watson said: Are there postions you have to handle where you `are slightly worse and have nothing to do`and they can´t  be helped?
So, what is your opinion on this? Give me hope or/and a good advice!
Thanks in advance!

greetings

wolfsblut
