I played 4...Qh4 once and won indeed, but I don't really trust it. Some lines where Black sacs the rook on a8 are great, but those positions where Black snatches pawn e4 ... brrr.
For those who own Gutman, like me: on page 122 White has a big improvement with 14.b4! iso 14.g3. This probably wins.
  
The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Grin Don't be like TN. It's rather a question of enjoying the position. Let me tell you this: I also play correspondence chess, but I would never play 4...Qh4 there, since its biggest value is the surprise value. I suspect about 80% of Scotch players below 2300 will know how to sac a pawn in exchange for leaving Blacks king in the center, but will have no idea of what to do afterwards. It provides Black with a very good chance (should he be prepared, especially Gutmans book is real good) to be with an extra pawn out of the opening without any compensation, since this compensation, more than sufficient at first, slowly disappears with second-rate moves. I am a Gambiteer, but I love playing sharp positions with either side, and that's why I think Anti-Gambits are reliable. Smiley Of course, Steinitz is not everyone's cup of tea.

On the day I answer the Scotch with 4...Qh4, they will serve ice-cold lemonade in Hades. I would not play it even in correspondence chess. That line belongs in 1858, not 2008.

What is the more risky (but also attacking) line for the black side ?
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd 4.Nxd4 ...
A] 4....Qh4 (seems almost rubbish ?)
B] 4... Bc5 5.Be3 a) 5... Qf6 or 5...Bb6  ?
C] 4... Nf6 a) 5. Nc3 (seems boring ?)
               b) 5. NxNc6 bxc6 6) e5 and the pressure is coming from the white side ?!
Don't you think so ?
