Even 3.b4 is possible - 3...cb4 4.d4 as in the Wing Gambit, although I don't think White has full compensation against best play. 3.d4 is objectively the strongest move.

1.e4 c5 2.c3 Nc6 3.d4 d5 4.exd5 Qxd5 directly transposes to 2...d5. If Black deviates from 3...d5 then just develop and maintain your centre. That is the whole idea of the 2.c3 variation.

i love playing the c-3 sillcian but run into trouble with this line.black playes 2. nc-6 instead of nf-6. so it goes like this e-4 c-5 2.c-3 NC-6. then whats white third move...is it d-4 or B-B5 or Bc-4/ if black plays 2.Nc-6 in a c-3 sillcian what do i do! Sad
