So you knew about the move Smiley !!!
I must agree I not and had to find it over the board by myself Smiley.

Your suggestion 5...Nc6 and other book suggestions like 5..Nf6 don't satisfied meand this time with black. But I agree I never tried 5...Né7.

I will do this right now and tell you what happened. But I'm glad that finaly the discussion is opened:-)

I have just seen this thread, but actually I have known about 8 Nb5! for years!

Fortunately, after 5 Ne2 Black has two much better ways of handling the position, (1) 5 ...Ne7 6 a3 Bc3 7 Nc3 d5, and (2) 5 ...Nc6!? 6 Be3 e5!?, the latter a suggestion of Glenn Flear.

Looks that we don't have a lot of English/Owen players here on the site.

That a "maybe" refutation 8.Nb5!! makes no bigger effect.

So keep on playing AndrewMartins recommandation 5...c5. in this line Smiley

Isn't 1.d4 b6 2.Nc3 e6 3.e4 etc. Owen's Defense? I reserve the name "English Defense" for lines with c4 early... Assuming you gave the right moves of course.

After two, too easy wins in a quick tournament (15 minutes) without moving my clock, I asked myself some questions how this was possible  Roll Eyes.

1)d4 b6 2)Nc3 e6 3)e4 Bb7 4)Bd3 Bb4 5)Nge2 c5 6)a3 Bxc3 7)Nxc3 cxd4 8)Nb5! d6 9)Qg4 Nf6 1o)Nxd6+ Qxd6 11)Qxg7 Rg8 12)Qxf6 Nbd7 13)Qh6 Rxg2 14)Bf4 Qf8 15)Qxf8 Kxf8 16)Bg3 f5 17)0-0-0 and so on.......

The second game was even quicker finished 6)a3 Ba5 7)0-0 cxd4 8)Nb5! and so on....

Bauer doesn't mention this line in his book and in my 2oo5 database I could not find a game with this variation.

Only Andrew Martin mentioned this line and give 5...c5 even an exclamation mark
For me it is just a blunder ! So take care when you face this line in OTB play Smiley
