I missed Nietzshe's reply.

Hume would respond by going back to his billiards game.  He saw the flaw of his own argument in his own time.

I agree though that Biology is more influential, at least for me, than Physics.  The three greatest scientific discoveries/inventions of the last 100 years are:
[3] The discovery and invention of the Atomic Bomb
[2]  The discovery and use of penicillin
[1] The discovery of the structure of DNA and the Genome Project

Perhaps atomic fission isn't even as important as the developments in the science of the mind.  I love Physics, but I think Nietzsche's right on this one.

Here I am trying to detail my knowledge of the larger archipelago and all I do is end up making an isthmus out of myself.

As for our current world crisis, don't blame me, I voted for physics.

One of my all-time favorite books, and Vizzini is Sicilian.  I thought that was too obvious.  (Both because of the obvious chess references and the stereotypes about Sicilians.  Oh well.)

"I'm not stupid, you know."

(I should quit bragging.)

And I should avoid pointing out that peninsular has only two n's and that "being a simple Physics teacher" is akin to being a small giant.

That is, unless there's a field of Physics known as Simple Physics, in which case, you forgot to capitalise simple.

I had hoped that correcting the errors of others would make me feel better.  Oh well.

"Physics still being the most successfull and influential branch of science of the last 200 years"

I'm intrigued by this.  I've always enjoyed physics but I've often heard that the biological sciences were the most successful in the past century or two.
I'm thinking about germ theory of medicine, genetics (and epigenetics), plus the very successful use of bio-chemistry in creating things like antibiotics, anesthetics, and vaccines.  Diseases were really only  treated for centuries but have only started getting cured in the past 150 years thanks to people like Salk.

Physics has obviously grown at a phenomenal rate, but with the life expectancy growing several fold in certain parts of the globe in the past 100 years, its a tough call as to success.  I, personally, am rather impressed by Epidemiology's ability to save literally millions of lives over the past few generations.    And how does one measure 'success' in a field of science?  By greater clarification of ideas?  By providing solutions to problems?

Nietzsche

p.s. - How would Hume respond to modern particle physics since it almost completely lies well outside of phenomenological experience?

"By some ardent enthusiasts Chess has been elevated into a science or an art. It is neither; but its principal characteristic seems to be what human nature mostly delights in - a fight." - Em. Lasker

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Maybe you are right.  What do you think it means?

Way cool! Cool

My handle on one website is one of the three kidnappers from that book/movie.  Wallace Shawn was fantastic as the Corsican.

Except he was a Sicilian.  "Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line."

Smyslov_Fan always did favor France over Italy.  Wink  In any event, Wallace Shawn was fantastic in the role of Vizzini.

BTW Smyslov_Fan, thanks for the thumbs up.  Princess Bride is one of the most quotable movies I have seen, and certainly one of my favorites.  Which of the three kidnappers did you choose for your handle?

The totality of reality is physically larger than what can fit in our heads.  The best anyone can acheive is to witness a slice of reality, and that, only from their own perspective which really cannot ever be shared.

Interpose the words "truth" or "reality" at the readers discretion.

Then why are you slumming here with us Philistines?  Is it through your magnificences and benevolence that you will lift us from our darkness into your light?

Frankly, you seem philosophically & blissfully ignorant to the fact that you are still chained in the cave, staring at shadows.

We all are, mate.

Well said. A bit acidic but hey that's fine.  I've spoiled my point, which was to encourage people to find this Reality for themselves, as I have only begun to do.  It's a process, and I realize I'm still in the cave, but I doing my best to turn around. I don't think you are Philistines, either.  I did not mean to come across as a know it all.  I'm sorry.

Being a simple teacher in physics I am scared to use words like "truth" and "reality". I don't really know what these mean. Physics only presents some mathematical models, which predict the outcome of experiments. Sometimes these predictions come true - again the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, August 1945 are convincing examples, sometimes not. But I doubt very much if physics presents the "truth" or explains "reality". Physics still being the most successfull and influential branch of science of the last 200 years I often wonder if the concepts "truth" and "reality" are useful.
Btw I am not of academic level as I never have finished university. I have studied political science for 1½ year.

I had a graduate advisor who liked to say,

"There is such a thing as Truth with a capital "T"; it's just unavailable for consultation."

I agree wholeheartedly with this as a guiding principle in objective (historical) research.  However, as a human being who is subjective, I like to seek out Truth knowing that I will either not find it or not be able to prove that I have found it.

Sounds a bit like some medieval quest for the Holy Grail.

I think your grad. advisor's saying is more witty and poetic than true.  To me, we ARE that truth and to say it is unvailable is to say we are unavaible to ourselves, which is bizarre to me. Once you  access this Reality all this becomes apparent.

I think the holy grail has deep symbolism about this very topic: finding our Selves and thus the Truth.

Truth is not the kind of thing that can be experienced.  It is a property of statements.

If you say so.  Look, your intellectual and academic prowess is evident, like others on this board who have entered this discussion (drkodos,Mnb,SmyslovFan come to mind).  I respect you for that. In comparison, I think I am more of an ordinary joe.  Perhaps my statements are unclear or inaccurate. Sorry bout that.

How about replacing the word Truth with Reality? To me, experiencing Reality leads to a perception of Truth.  Thanks for the insightful reactions to my posts.  They are useful to me and very interesting.
