My impression of the CBM surveys was that they were nice, but not worth the extra money.  Is that how others feel about them?

Hello again,
In fact Megabase contains only the games from CBMs, CBMs Extra and some other sources. The other articles published in CBM like Endgames, Tactics, Strategy, Opening Surveys are not included. Opening Surveys can be found in the Opening Enciclopedia, but if one is a full CBM subscriber then he simply does not need this OE as also new newest Mega. Simply copy the games from CBM and CBM Extra to your old Mega and you will have an updated version.
I am collecting in a separate databases all articles from CBM so I always can check them there.
The same is with Correspondence Database - all the corr. games from CBMs are collected there, so no need to buy it.
Regards

Thanks for this news. Are matters so clear, though, please? My MegaBase doesn't seem to have all the CBM surveys on it and I know that special columns (especially Pete Wells' excellent one) generally don't make it on.

To the best of my knowledge neither does the encyclopaedia?

But I must confess I am not 100% positive, as I never did a survey by survey check, however when doing position searches across multiple databses simultaneously those two databases always toss up identical annotated games.

I honestly do not see any added value in having the two, but should you opt to go that way please advise me if I'm mistaken.

Does anyone have both of these ChessBase products please? I have the Mega Database for the annotated games, but wondered if the other was also worth getting. Is there a lot of overlap, but with all of the CBM opening surveys in the encyclopaedia?

If you have Megabase, you in essence have the encyclopaedia. The encyclopaedia is nothing more than a scaled down version of megabase, all the annotated games are exactly the same and the fact that chessbase does not make this clear to consumers is tantamount to a rip off.

Yes I paid to learn this harsh lesson, but got satisfaction by downloading all their engines for free from some torrent site.

That'll teach them!!  Angry

In fact I think that having some of the oldest CB Opening Enciclopedias and all the issues of CBM you can simply compile your own. As far as i know ( I have an old edition of it) it contains some very old opening surveys and each year is updated with latest opening surveys from CBM. So I think it does not deserve attention. Better investment would be a CBM subscription.

Yes, I agree with this.  When I first got ChessBase, I bought the then-current Opening Encyclopedia and was disappointed with it.  Many of the surveys were outdated and did little more than collect some games from the database.  Perhaps they have improved the Opening Encyclopedia since then, but I don't think I would risk it.  MegaBase updated with CBM sounds like a more sensible suggestion.

A lot of the surveys in past Opening Encyclopedias have been very outdated.

Carsten Hansen has been down on that product (the Encyclopedia), e.g. "mostly a big rip-off" in reviewing the 2007 edition.

Indeed! Can nobody really help? Surely CB's Opening Encyclopaedia must sell at least a couple of copies?  Wink

disappointing no replies as I've been wondering about  this too. and also, does anybody use the Chess Assistant opening encyclopedia? ( I like the ability to display lines in an ECO table that the CA stuff has)
