Seems to me that Gambit has recently become afflicted with some form of Tourette syndrome.  Iirc, his blurtings used to be a bit more focussed than they seem to be lately.

I am not a teen. FYI, I have a Master's degree in Political Science, and can f--- five women at one time. Also, I   beat scaredy chess players who chicken out of gambits.

It's strange to call a publishing house a "teen". Embarrassed

Although they probably are (or at least they were founded relatively recently), and I do tend to disregard anything they write! Wink

Errm,

Tony was referring to the publishing house, Gambit, not the avatar here.  It's strange to call a publishing house a "teen". Embarrassed

It's a pity Watsons series is so hard to find... and in descriptive notation. Otherwise it'd be a very fine and nonetheless sufficinetly thorough introduction.
(Somehow these pre-puter pre-database books have a quality that is lacking nowadays. I find it hard to put my finger on it, but I keep returning to them more often than to the more recent ones, however more accurate they're supposed to be.)

I suggest you feel entirely free to entirely disregard anything that gambit writes as being utterly inconsequential.
Why listen to such a foolish teen?

Are there any opdates of Kosten´s book ?

When ChessPublishing started I was doing monthly updates to the book, but then Gambit complained (!) as whereas I thought it would be good publicity for the book, they claimed that "the material impacts on your contract" and so I had to stop. Sad
Still, all the games are still in the PGN Archive. Wink

Starting Out: The English is good if one is new to the English Opening. Given your rating it should take you no time at all to become familiar with the basics of the English. Watson's older series on the English is still good stuff though dated.......also Chess Explained: English Opening is good but only covers the major variations but it does this in depth.......

You are certainly going to find it tough to avoid the QGD after 1.c4 e6 2.Nc3 (2...d5!) but at least you have kept your options open by not playing an early Nf3, so the Exchange Variation remains a strong possibility.

If instead Black plays 2...Nf6 you may wish to investigate the Flohr-Mikenas Attack, 3.e4!? which can lead to some fairly lively play.  It has been fairly well-explored and you will need to know some theory - but given that the alternative is either (a) the Nimzo (after 3.d4 Bb4) or (b) the QGD with an early Nf3 (after 3.Nf3 d5), you may consider that you have got off  fairly lightly ...

Another way to go is to play 1.c4 e6 2.Nf3 (eschewing Nc3) and after 2...d5 3.d4 Nf6 head for a Catalan with 4.g3 - this retains more of a 'flank opening' feel with the kingside fianchetto.  Thanks especially to Mr V Kramnik, though, this, too, is very well-documented and quite theoretical in places.

If you go down the Catalan route, I would strongly urge you to consider opening 1.Nf3!? eliminating the option of 1.c4 e5(!) - that should save some time for learning some of the finer points of the Catalan!

Going 1.Nf3 has the big disadvantage of not getting the lines Kosten recommends. He delays Nf3 or goes without. Ie the Botwinnik-setup is not that good with Nf3 in.

Plus after being forced to look into the catalan I still dont understand much about it Wink

There was a time when barely a month went past without a Flohr-Mikenas game being covered in the Flank Openings update - so it may well be that the best thing you could do is to subscribe to the ChessPublishing Flank Openings section and get complete access to the archives.

There is an old Chess Enterprises book on the F-M by Paul Janicki and Jerzy Konikowski knocking around which, if you can get hold of it, is still reasonably interesting and provides a good background, despite apparently having been produced on an old typewriter.

But some of the positions are quite sharp so it makes sense to do some independent research to bring things up to date a bit - hence the ChessPublishing subscription is probably the single best thing you can do - and obviously it will give you access to all sorts of other stuff, too!
