In a complete game, go to the move which gives you the tactical position you want and simply type [.

([ is the keyboard shorcut for the "delete previous moves" command)

BTW, right-clicking will give you a context-dependent list of available commands with keyboard shortcuts listed next to them (useful if you forget a command or keyboard shortcut).

For an online datatbase, if the FEN for the position is listed (as it is in the Chess Puzzles by GMs db) you can copy the FEN, then open up a New Game window in Chessbase, where you can paste the position it ("Paste Position" command from the Edit menu, CTRL-V won't do it) and save it to your tactics database.

Thanks Ostap and Gerry,

I've seen the GM site but haven't used it that much. It looks great though, thanks for the tip.

Ostap, if I look for tactics in a database and I find one I like, how do I save the tactic to an individual database and delete the rest of the game moves?

I want to try to make a database with tactics positions that I have found and include my own variations, annotations, thematic coloring etc. and use it for training some of my students.

If anyone knows how to do this or could refer me to some online source that would be great.

Hello Gerbarts:

Just checked what Chessbase had.

First you could set up your own searches (bK has the 3 Ps protecting him, and wB on d3 sacs on h7 with a White win). You could do this with a combination of Maneuvers, Position, and Game Data search features. All this would take time to set up a database.

Second, you could use their Tactics key. An example would be the following hierarchy of subkeys:
- Destroying the Pawn Shield
  - Key Field h7
    - Bishop-sacrifice on h7

Now I think I might actually play with this feature a bit. Looks very interesting.

Take care,

Gerry

As far as free stuff goes, Chess Puzzles by GMs is a good site.  Although not sorted by theme or difficulty, there's a large number of tactics positions to look through.  Chessvibes posts a Daily Puzzle, usually a position out of Chess Informant or a similar source. Other tactics sites I've run across are DejaScacchi and Chess Tactics Explained in English: A Complete Tutorial.

Does anyone know where you can find a large database with tactics that don't exist in any books already? I'm getting annoyed with books using the same puzzles over and over.

If that database has some that you can sort by difficulty that would be awesome aswell.

What about chessbase, I think I remember that it has some feature where you can search for tactics in games ( ? )
