So, saving the opening books (File: Save Book... command, I assume) will put the saved .ctg file in the Fritz directory and you just load the saved book after starting up Fritz?  This means separate books for Player White and Player Black.  Is this problematic?  Is there any need to merge these two opening books (or a way to do so)?

Funnily enough, I have never used the books in Fritz (or any other chessbase engine for that matter). I usually scan the book looking at the lines that that particular player uses. As an example, if you run a dossier on Karpov, it will produce two books, KarpovWhite and KarpovBlack. As far as I know, you can only load one book at a time onto Fritz, so if you load KarpovWhite, and set yourself up to play as Black only, you will be playing against Karpovs White repertoire. Vice versa for the other part of his repertoire.

It's not a bad idea to do a Dossier on yourself - that way you can find which openings are your strengths and weaknesses.

To create an opening book, click on a number of games, and then right-click, followed by "games to book". You can even save the opening book, although this can take up a number of megabytes, depending on the size of the tree.

drkodos, your answer was one sentence longer than my planned original answer:

"Yes."

The player dossier feature is very nice!  I didn't know it existed until you mentioned it here.

When chessbase generates an opening book for  player can one save that and play fritz using that book?

Yes.  You need to "load the book" and tell the engine to use it.

A quick way is to go to www.chessgames.com and type in the players name. There is a profile that shows the openings played by that particular player, and the ECO codes as well.

I use ChessBase and run a dossier on the player. It will automatically generate a Black book and a White book, as well as pulling out all the players games, tournaments, several mate problems and most successfull openings used. This is pretty useful.

I need some help and I figured you'd be the group to ask. If anyone knows I'm sure it is one of you.  I'm looking for a database or breakdown of players and the openings they played. If I wanted to examine Capablanca and his games I'd want to know what openings he played and how often.

For example:

White
QGD = 42 games
QGA = 6
Lopez = 36
4knights = 14
and so on

Black
QGD = 38
Lopez = 40
Sicilian = 2
and so forth

Statistical analysis like this is very informative and interesting and it seems to me this has to be floating around in cyberspace somewhere and I was hoping one of you would know where.
