Possibly a bit harsh, since some version of this "letting the queen into the center" thing (like 3...ed 4. Nxd4 Nxd4 or 4...Nge7 and 5...Nxd4) has been tried by a number of GMs (e.g. Spassky, Ivan Sokolov, Velimirovic, Degraeve, Mikhail Tseitlin).  At least one (Ludger Keitlinghaus from Germany) has played like that a number of times.

You left out some moves in the first line.

I would think it is certainly playable ("good equalizing weapon" is hardly plausible though).  After 4. Nxd4 ed 5. Qxd4 (this is transposing to 3...ed 4. Nxd4 Nxd4 of course) Ne7, the latest incarnation of ECO I have gives 6. Nc3 as leading to a slight advantage for White (which is surely plausible).

Hello,

I was wondering if after 1. e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 Nxd4 black does have such a bad position. If it worked it would probably a great way to avoid some tricky lines like the Scotch gambit or the blumenfeld attack, not to mention the main lines of the Scotch.

According to my only source on this line (which is Wikipedia quoting the ECO  Embarrassed)  the main lines are:

a) 1. e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 Nxd4 4. Nxd4 Ne7 6.Bc4 Nc6 7.Qd5 Qf6 8.0-0 Ne5 9.Be2 c6 10.Qb3 11.f4 Bc5+ 12.Kh1 d6 and now equal

b) 1. e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 Nxd4 4.Nxe5 Ne6 5.Bc4 Nf6 6.Nc3 Be7 7.0-0 0-0 8.Be3 d6 8.Nd3 Nxe4 10.Nxe4 d5 and equal.

Therefor I'd like to know this forum's opinion on this line. Is it playable, a good equalizing weapon or are there improvements on the lines quoted above that render the line unplayable.
