Conventional wisdom tells that the following line

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.a3 Bxc3 5.bxc3 dxe4 6.Qg4 Nf6 7.Qxg7 Rg8 8.Qh6 Nbd7 - a line recommended by Watson in the 3rd edition - 

should lead to no white advantage - like all the other cheap (=less theoretical) ways to avoid winawer mainlines as White. 

Nevertheless I (playing french as black most of my chesslive)  searched for such a cheap weapon for occasional use as White after 1.d4 e6 2.e4!. Using a database consisting of high quality games (Elo > 2400 for both players, games 2000-2008) I found 9.a4!, a move first played 2004 with a 5,5 - 0,5 score since then. Miladinovic problably invented it, scoring 4-0 when he played it.

At least Watsons recommendation seems outdated due to that result. There is no information on the variation in the chesspub - french section either.

Other moves than 8....Nbd7 occurred in 19 games in the above mentioned database, scoring 14-5 for White. Maybe Black hat to look for completely different ways like 4....Ba5 or 5....Ne7

What does that all mean? I leave this topic to better players. But maybe you are interested in this variation.
