Bronstein on the Kings Indian is also a nice old school book.

2. Studying the ebb/flow of a high-quality, ten player, round robin tournament, eventually won by Spassky as he held off a charging Fischer.
3. Improving your descriptive notation reading skills.


I have both Piatigorsky books (they were reprinted in paperback by Dover) and enjoyed them.

Of course the Bronstein/Vainstein book on Zurich '53 is also a good source for King's Indians, and Najdorf's book on the same tournament (in Spanish) is an even better read IMHO.

Which brings me nicely on to "Miguel Najdorf: King of the King's Indian Defense" by Minev - a useful collection, illustrating the nitty-gritty of playing the KID; even the games where Black suffers can be instructive.

Finally,  for another good selection of classic annotated King's Indian, Marovic's book from 1984 Play the King's Indian is hard to beat..

Yes, the alphabet has proven tough for me to navigate in the past.

I guess I wasn't clear enough with "old school", "vintage", and "classic" as my adjectives ?

As a lowly amateur, playing for the love of the game......I find great value in these types of game annotations as they actually help me understand the foundation themes of the core opening and middle game positions that result.

If I want complex variation lines..... I know where Fritz and Rybka live ! ! !

What kind of book is this you speak of?  Have the lines in it been analyzed by Rybka, looked up in a database, checked against the latest repertoire books, and tested in internet blitz?

I didn't think so.


I hope they printed all the pages correctly in your copy (unlike mine) ...
