First, the few 7...Nc6 -Euwe Defense games in the databases suffer from a poor understanding of the theory by the White player. I pretty much have most, if not all, games played with 1 d4 d5 2 e4 de4 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 f3 ef3 5 Nxf3 e6 6 Bg5 Be7 (also, 6...Bb4) 7 Bd3 Nc6 8 00 Nxd4 (also, < 8...Nxd4) and its derivatives.
Thus, I am THE EXPERT on this line. I tell you that most White players who lose with 7...Nc6 8 00 Nxd4 9 Kh1 do not  find the best moves for White.

Second, I am aware of 8 h3 Nc6 in the Bogoljubow Defense. There are ways to play against that, including 9 d5 and 9 Ne2. A detailed article is in the works, based on my tournament praxis, Internet Chess Club, and extant database games. From what I have seen, 8...Nc6 is rather infrequently played. Most often you see 8...c6 or 8...Nbd7 .

In chess, you must be willing to take risks. Those who are afraid of risk will never get anywhere. Wars are won or lost with a certain risk strategy. It is the same with chess.

Such is my opinion.

8.h3 is covered in page 174 in the extract:
Quote:
8 h3 prevents ...Bg4 to take pressure off d4, intending to follow with Bg5 and Qd2 (as pointed out by Lane), but in my view it is too slow

He analyses 8...Nc6 (in preference to 8...Nbd7 which allows the Qe1-Qh4-Bh6 plan) and suggests that White struggles to generate decent compensation.

I read the Bgoljubow Defense extract. Seems to me that the author does not analyze the Delayed Studier/Orlov/ Studier-Zilbermints Attack (three names for the same line!) in much detail.

1 d4 d5 2 e4 dxe4 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 f3 ef3 5 Nxf3 g6 6 Bc4 Bg7 7 00 00 8 h3!?

Now, I have played and analyzed this in great detail. The idea is to prevent ...Bg4, and then continue in regular Studier Attack fashion with Qe1-Qh4-Bh6-Ng5.
The move 8 h3 was originally proposed by IM Georgi Orlov in 1995, but with no analyses or games. And the second name, Delayed Studier, is so called because the standard 8 Qe1 is delayed by a move.

Studier-Zilbermints Attack combines both 8 h3 and the Qe1-Qh4-Bh6-Ng5 maneuver.

Is it really worth giving more attention to? What's your idea after 8...Nc6 - ? There are only a few games in the databases and Black wins nearly all of them.

I felt the same when I saw the PDF extracts a couple of days ago.  In addition to that promising half-chapter and the promising introduction (expressing the work as an attempt to chart the middle ground between the two polarised "camps" on the BDG by someone who has never played it in a serious game), the chapters give the impression that all of Black's major defences are thoroughly covered.

Yeah this book looks good for sure. I might have to buy it as well.

There now are pdf extracts from the book at http://www.everymanchess.com/chess/books/The_Blackmar-Diemer_Gambit%3A_A_modern_..., so maybe February now is realistic

The half chapter on 5...g6 looks very convincing. Must be the first book on this opening that tries to be objective.
I might buy it.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Chris,

Anyway it would be simultaneously released in eBook format?  I know Everyman has done that (infrequently), but I prefer that so I can make notes in it and save them, as well as simultaneously compare computer and database analysis.

I received another message from EVERYMAN CHESS this morning.

"Thank you for bringing this to my attention. The book is still in the schedule and I do not know why Amazon are listing it as Out of Print. I will get in touch with them immediately. The book itself should publish at the end of November.
Best regards, Dan Addelman Everyman Chess"

Well done Everyman, and thank you for the response. And Antillilian, it seems you were right about amazon not being reliable.

On another thread about the BDG, I asked if anyone knew what was going on with Christoph Scheerer's new book on the BDG. Amazon.com had changed its listing to OUT OF PRINT - LIMITED AVAILABILITY so I was wondering what happened.

Antillian responded, "Information on book releases from amazon.com is often not reliable. But if you really need to know, you might want to consider contacting the publisher directly..."

Good advice, so I wrote EVERYMAN CHESS expressing my interest in the status of Christoph's book. This is their reply;

"Many thanks for your web feedback. We will keep you updated on our special offers and exclusives. In the meantime, if you have any other queries don't hesitate to contact us.
Regards, Dan Addelman"

A total non-answer! I guess the only way to find out is if Christoph tells us.

Thanks for the clarifications Willempie.

Re. Markovich's post, it's a good assessment of what I mean.  As I'm not graded above 2000 and might never be, I don't feel 'qualified' to suggest opening systems to people much stronger than I.  I would only ever suggest the BDG as an option to young and improving players.  And I agree, incidentally, with Markovich's assessment of the opening itself.

Since the current state of opening theory is that Black has his ways to equality/unclarity anyway,
it is acceptable to deliberately play something equal with White for training purposes.

But to play something worse, where you risk losing without making any other mistakes, is pushing too far.
If you want to train in difficult tactical positions, you could do it with your trainer or comp.
