And not for the first time against Aronian. 3 years ago, Carlsen lost this rook endgame to Lev: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1437592

In Round 8, Aronian managed to defeat Carlsen from a theoretically drawn ending:

Hello:

To answer the original question, maybe it's Gambit's thread, and not Kamsky-Topalov, that has kept us from a Linares thread? Fourteen pages!!

Ivanchuk beat Aronin today and offered a draw yesterday in a winning position I read. Supposedly a sportsmanship thingy - in mutual time scramble he knocked over pieces a few times, Dominguez put them back on his own time, so after time control Ivanchuk offered a draw.

One sees very interesting and nice stories about Ivanchuk. I hope he wins it.

Here's kind of a similar game:

Piket-Golubev [E83]
Bundesliga 0203 Germany (2.2), 20.10.2002
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.f3 0–0 6.Be3 a6 7.Qd2 Nc6 8.Nge2 Re8 9.Rc1 Bd7 10.b3 e6 11.h3 Rb8

See Piket-Golubev, BL 2002/3, annotated by Max Notkin (CBV)

The annotated game might help shed some light on the opening in Anand-Grischuk.

If you subscribe to the King's Indian section at ChessPublishing, you might also want to take a look at the Nov '02 update

With 16 min left to make his next 19 moves, Grischuk seems to be developing a touch of zeitnot.

Does make you wonder if Kramnik was sat watching that wishing he'd chosen Qc2 and g4 instead of the Meran. Surely Anand can't have planned to play like that vs Kramnik?

Incidentally does anyone have a clue what on earth is going on in Anand - Grischuk? They seem to be using up huge amounts of time and producing some profoundly obscure moves Smiley

In the sixth round and no thread!  Is Topalov-Kamsky that big a distraction?

After 5 rounds:
Aronian, Grischuk       3.5
Anand                        3
Carlsen, Ivanchuk       2.5
Dominguez                 2
Radjabov, Wang Yue   1.5

Carlsen looks poised to defeat Anand today:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

After 51...Nc4

Grischuk beat Aronian; Ivanchuk-Dominguez and Wang Yue-Radjabov both drawn.

New standing will likely be:

After 6 rounds:
Grischuk                    4.5
Aronian, Carlsen         3.5
Anand, Ivanchuk         3
Dominguez                 2.5
Radjabov, Wang Yue   2
